Create a Complete Strobing System From Foamies & Velcro
Photographer and Strobist fan John Cavan got a pretty cool line up of speedstrap like DIY attachments.
The line, which can be made in about 20 minutes total (or less), includes a foamy & Velcro based speedstrap and an assortment of Strobist friendly foamy & Velcro based modifiers: a snoot, a Gobo and a bounce card. You now I love foamies and Velcro so this is like a small party for me.
the nice thing about this set is that it looks 100% pro, so you should feel fine on working with them around
clients.
Here are bigger images of the system, looking good, right? They are now officially part of the oh so cool 2 minutes speed strap mods.

I know what you're thinking. Wow this is cool. I have spare 5 minutes this afternoon. How can I make those. John, Being the king that he is, shares how each of those was build. So get some Foamies and Velcro and go read the full tutorial On John's Blog. If you end up using (or even wishing) for those, leave a comment to say thanks.

very good!!!I've been trying
very good!!!I've been trying to do a pair of snoots, but they're on standby...
now I'm focused on my own bokehmatic...
Thanks!
Udi is right, it's really only about 20 minutes of effort if you have all the pieces at hand. I simply got on a roll with them this weekend after I got started on a gel holder made of balsa wood from a craft store. What can I say, Foamies and Velcro are about the best thing to happen to the DIY photographer.
Foamies & Velcro
Nice job. But I would put the fuzzy velcro on the flash and hooky velcro on the attachments. The flash head will pick up every piece of lint, cat hair, coat fuzz, scarf yarn, etc. If a woman passes her silk blouse across the hookies you'll hear the scream across three counties! Cheahs.
re: fuzzy and hooky
Thanks for bringing this up, Lindy.
This is definitely a valid point. It's just that us guys never had to deal with silk scarfs and blouses ;)
That's easy
Just reverse my velcro suggestions across the board and it will all work. I have to admit, though, that that I hadn't really consider the silk blouse angle. :)
cheap and easy
Spent about 10 bucks at Walmart and about 30 minutes making 2 barn doors and a reflector. Even made one of those Zeh Bounce reflectors that you can use for your pop-up flash.
As far as the velcro goes, I purchased the actual Velcro brand stuff and their "hook" side of the stuff wasnt near as aggressive as the typical velcro. Maybe something to look in too.
great ideas....
these are great DIY ideas on flash accessories...
one good idea for making diffusers is using those plastic disposable cutting boards they sell... very cheap and is workable.
Velcro is the greatest
Velcro is the greatest invention ever. Do you think making a lightweight softbox would be feasable with this very same system?
I would think so
I've been mulling that idea around in my head, it would certainly seem possible. I may have to give it a go now!
sweet!
Thanks a ton! Can't wait to hit the craft store later today!
