Calibrite’s new Display Plus HL calibrates super bright HDR displays up to 10,000 nits

Calibrite has announced its newest monitor calibration devices. There are three in the lineup, starting with the basic model Display SL, then the Display Pro HL and finally, the Display Plus HL. The Calibrite Display SL (buy here) supports more traditional desktop displays for current model LCD devices. The Pro HL (buy here) and Plus HL (buy here) models support brighter and more advanced display technologies.

Calibration devices allow you to correct the display of your desktop or laptop screen (or projector) to ensure they display accurate colours. This helps you keep consistent colour throughout your editing process so that the final result looks the way you envisioned the shot when you pressed the shutter.

Calibrite finally lets you tripod-mount your ColorChecker with the Target Holder

One of the biggest issues with the various ColorChecker and ColorChecker Passport devices from Calibrite (formerly X-Rite) is that they’re quite delicate and you have to actually hold them in your hand in order to use them. This often leads to finger slips, resulting in obscured views of the checker or, worse, fingerprints getting on it.

Now, though, you can actually mount your ColorCheckers on a light stand or tripod now that Calibrite has announced the new ColorChecker Target Holder (buy here). It provides a mounting mechanism for holding your ColorChecker along with two 1/4-20″ sockets to let you mount it however you wish.

Master Match colour corrects any camera to any other camera or colour grade

One of the difficult things we do when shooting video is matching multiple cameras. Unless you happen to have several cameras of the same model, with the same lenses and same setup (and sometimes even if you do), there are always going to be at least some differences between one setup and the next. Sometimes, even with a single camera, you can see differences from one shot to the next just because of lighting changes.

Whatever the reason, making one piece of footage match another in the edit can be a painstaking task. Picture Instruments wants to remove the pain from that task with their new software, Master Match. It’s designed to let you easily correct multiple cameras, or multiple shots from the same camera, to each other or even have them match to a final grade, producing a LUT that you can import straight into your video editor.

If you’ve been in this for a while, now may be a good time to consider upgrading to a professional monitor. In the end, a better monitor will get you more accurate results, a more convenient workflow, and less eye fatigue. But, like any piece of pro gear, diving into all the features and buzzwords of a pro monitor can be pretty confusing. We asked Kevin Cheng, the marketing director of ViewSonic UK, what we should look for in a pro monitor. And we are here to bring some order into this area.

Calibrite targets hybrid photo & video shooters with the new ColorChecker Passport Duo

The ColorChecker Passport Photo and the ColorChecker Passport Video (review here) are common items in the bags of many photographers and filmmakers. But for those of us who shoot both, it means we end up having to buy two separate products. And I don’t know about you, but I sometimes find myself accidentally grabbing and leaving the house with the wrong one when I head out to shoot.

Well, Calibrite – the new brand name for X-Rite’s products aimed at filmmakers and photographers – is aiming to change all that by combining both ColorCheckers into one, with the new ColorChecker Passport Duo. It does come with a slightly increased price tag over either of the individual ColorChecker Passports, but it’s less than the combined total of buying both.
