Cool Gloves Will Help You Photograph When It Is Freezing + Giveaway

Cool Gloves Will Help You Photograph When It Is FreezingHave you ever tried to photograph a wolf on a wild terrain when it is sub-zero outside? If you have, you must know that gloves are a photographer's friend. Of course, gloves can be a nemesis as well, if they are making you clumsy and take away your ability to press them little camera buttons.

I am going to show three ways to handle gloves clumsiness fever and then we will have a giveaway at the end.

Why Is It Making You Clumsy?

Have you ever tried zipping a fly with gloves on? Making a button on a blouse? Those are annoying, not to say impossible tasks when wearing gloves. Now, think about pressing all those little setting buttons on your camera. Changing ISO, shutter speed, chimping. Ain't that easy with gloves on.

Actually it is not the gloves that kill you it is the lack of fingertips. If you had your fingertips with you, everything would have been fine. Here are three options to get your fingertips back. Even more specifically it is the lack of your index and thumb tips that makes it so hard.

Option 1 - Buy a Pair of Tipped Gloves

etretouchyThis is probably the easiest way and the most expensive one. If you're not into DIY homeless chick, this is a good alternative for you. Etre Touchy has just the cool gloves that will keep you warm while leaving your finger tips free to touch the iPod touch or push that little preview button.

This is by far the more stylish way of the three, and they are made knitted which is a big plus. Etre also has a cool combo between usability (on thumb and index finger) and coziness (on other three fingers).

Etre are also doing a little fun giveaway with us, at the end of the post.

OK, but this is a DIY Blog so why not go to

Option 2 - Knit a Pair of Tipped Gloves

knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTknucks.htmlI must say that knowing knitting is not one of my traits. I wish it was, but it is not. That said, if you know how to knit (or have one of those super cool knitting grannies) this is the second best as far as fashion and coziness go.

You can build upon many of the mittens or gloves patterns out there to create thumb and index tip free mittens.

Or you can add fingers to a fingerless design like this one.

For all the rest of us, there is always

Option 3 - Hack a Pair of Tipped Gloves

Cool Gloves Will Help You Photograph When It Is FreezingOK, this may sound simple, but it is genius. If you did not win the giveaway, and don't know how to knit, you can simply cut the thumb and index tips from a glove.

It won't be as cool as option 1; it won't be as crafty as option 2, but it will keep your hands warm and your fingers available to push them buttons. It will also provide you with that much desired tough street look.

If you go this way, make sure you do this with fleece gloves. I got a pair of those for about $7. Trying this with wool gloves will reward you with a long thread of yarn.

Etre Touchy Giveaway

i'm currently using my full finger cycling gloves when it's chilly and i'm on a shoot, but sometimes they can get a little bit clumsy. these look pretty awesome.

If you're going to cut down a pair of gloves, try to get some that have some rubberized gripping on the palm - just enough to cover where your hand contacts the camera so you don't drop it.

Nice

I could have really used a pair this winter!

Sweet.

I've been wearing a pair of girly stretchy gloves to shoot and cover my oh so manly hands.  I can still handle my buttons, but my fingers stay warm.  In our weather I'd probably have to wear a pair of warm gloves over my little stretchy ones, it gets cold here in the north.

Oh, PS.  I'd love to win. ;)

Kind of late;)

It's march and now were getting gloves!!

Warm

I would like the gloves from Etre to not look like a homeless anymore. xD

If you want some great gloves for photography check out the ones from Mountain Equipment Co-Op in Canada...they are MEC Windstopper N2S Gloves they are awsome.  I have 3 pairs.

Super-light multi-sport shells. GORE™ N2S® (next-to-skin) fabric makes them water-resistant, windproof, and highly breathable. Silicone tracks on the palms and fingers provide grip and dexterity.

I also use full fingered

I also use full fingered cycling gloves but they are sometimes too thin.  These would be a great thing to have, especially up here in Maine during the winter.

Etre!

These Etre gloves would be awesome for photographing in snow. I've been using bike gloves for photographing at night in the cold.

I have been to Canada for Christmas taking photos. My hands were shaking so bad that I had some problems with focusing even when using tripod :P

Gloves

I bought a pair of un tipped gloves from target this year. I think they were mossimo. I had previously tried cutting a pair of knit ones and thought I would be smart and use a lighter to melt the nylon... Yeah other than smelling awful they were also rough and uncomftorable

I have been trying most of the winter to find a set of tipped gloves to buy that would work well.  I have yet to find a pair that seemed worth the money and I can't buy a pair to butcher them.  These sound great and look stylish, they look like they would work well.

Touche!

I make my own fingerless gloves all the time! (A la option 3.) I hate gloves, but have hand issues so I need something to keep them from getting stiff. I wear them almost all year around, actually. Some pretty Etre Touchy gloves would make me look far less homeless, though! =)

The tip for gloves is to always leave them on. Once you take them off in extreme cold they are no good.

haven't tried cutting the tips.....have tried various types including shootiing mits, mil surplus, knit, fleece......

best solution so far has been a pair of thin synthetic glove liners from Outdoor Research.  Not cheap, but very tactile, and keeps skin away from cold contact.  Have had my 2nd pair for five or six years now.  They compress to a very tiny volume when not in use, too.

Lowepro Gloves

Hi,

You just forgot to mention Lowepro photo gloves.

They keep your hands warm (except in heavy wind) and you can still perfectly control a DSLR.

been looking around for good

  • March 17, 2010
  • melvin

been looking around for good pair of fingerless gloves. those etre ones look perfect!

Gloves

I made myself a pair about 5 months ago out of some old gloves. Still in -10 degree temperature my hands were freezing mine are not so better when it comes to really low temperature.

Anyways, theese gloves look like they're made from a different material so maybe they're able to keep your hand warm in more "extreme" temperatures than my gloves.

Firing gloves.

The more expensive buying route is ok for me.  When deployed to Iraq i used a pair of firing gloves for this.

Super gloves

  • March 17, 2010
  • Maggie

For the cut down gloves - would it work if the tips of fingers were only partially cut round (so they were able to flip over the finger tip) and then a little bit of velcro added so they could flip back over the fingers and be fastened? I think the gloves would have to be a size to big for this to work, but you would be warm!  Those Etre gloves look brilliant.

cool gloves

I can't remember the site, but I once saw a blog about knitting where they explained how to knit a glove with a small hole through which you out your index just for the few seconds needed to press the shutter.

I'll try to find the url

mountaineering

  • March 17, 2010
  • sebD

There is a similar issue when mountaineering in the winter : manipulating cords and gear in freezing cold. There is no way to remove the glove even for a few seconds when its -15°C or less. A solution is to wear thin glove that enable you to manipulate (tipped gloves for example) and add a bigger pair of mittens on top that you can remove on demand.

Camera Gloves

My hands are always freezing so these would be great in keeping them warm.

I've got some nice mittens

I've got some nice mittens from Reiss that still give me the flexibility to move around the back of the camera, although I really only need the thumb and forefinger free...

Gloves keep us warm...

...and protect the hands from strong sunlight too!

Don't need any :-)

  • March 17, 2010
  • Anonymous

I knit my own, so I don't need any gloves. If you're into doing it yourself, remember to make the part that covers the wrist fairly long. A warm wrist will do wonders for warm fingers and you won't get cold when you stretch your arms out of the jacket.

You can buy knit gloves, thread a bit of yarn through the "fabric" and tie off. That way they won't undo themselves when you cut the tips off.

A pair of pulse warmers (80ies, here we come) will offer additional protection.

And to top it all off, get mittens, cut off at about half the palm and sew that part to your fingerless gloves. That will cover your fingertips when not shooting.

Photography Gloves...

  • March 17, 2010
  • Michael Rose

I got a pair of 'Aqua Tech Sensory Gloves (Large)' given to me by wife because I was literally freezing my hands trying to shoot photos of the County crew cleaning up our street after a recent snow storm.

They are simply fabulous for photography, light-weight, very warm, water-resistant, and they allow needed access to Camera controls!

They're available in small, medium, large, X-large, & XX-large, all are $49.95 and have a 1-Year Limited Warranty Against Manufacturer Defects.

The large fit my large hands properly-- I'd say the sizes are accurate. I didn't want something clumsy-- my wife knew that-- smart gal!

I think they are worth every penny of the price,

Now that might make me want to go out in the cold!

  • March 17, 2010
  • Barb

If you're going to do the DIY route, would it work better if instead of cutting the tips you just cut a slit to push you finger tips through and then when you take a break you can retract the finger tips back inside?  What do you think or would the extra material get in the way?

Nice!

This is a great idea. I've never been able to find a pair of gloves that are warm, but allow me to take pictures in the cold winter of Kansas, and Colorado. I currently use some windstopper gloves from Cloudveil, but they still don’t have quite enough insulation.

Framing Gloves

I've found that construction framing gloves are great for maintaining buton dexterity and still having gloves...$10 from a hardware store or amazon.

As I posted on Facebook this morning - Looking forward to the first day of spring this weekend. Forecast for here: Windy, periods of snow. Highs in the low 30's.

It's not too late to use those gloves this year.  Please  :)

Love The Glove

The gloves look like a great addition to my camera kit. Nicely done.

Gloves!

I had a extra single glove lying around and gave this a shot.  It worked wonders..... but it was for the wrong hand.

Save my scissors

Stop me cutting up my gloves and accept my entry please.

I use bow hunting gloves

I use bow hunting gloves whenever I shoot in cold temperatures. Mossy Oak and Manzella make great gloves. I was able to use my camera fully, dial a cell phone, even pick my nose without removing them or exposing my fingertips to the cold, snow, and wind. They also have suede. grippy palms and fingers to prevent slipping and their thin, but warm, construction keeps you feeling connected to your equipment.

Excellent gloves!

We own a pair of Etre Touchy and love them. In fact, it is featured in our top iPhone gloves list and most of these gloves meant for smartphones cane be used by photographers too!

Would love to win another pair of these here. Thanks for the giveaway!

Improvement suggestion

I saw somewhere tipped gloves with caps that can be pulled onto finger tips when necessary, or taken off and hanging loose from the glove when working with camera.

Having said that, I would not mind to win a pair of tipped gloves!

Those hand-warmer things in a

Those hand-warmer things in a pocket do the trick when it's really cold, but some custom gloves would even be better,  I hope I get picked, also to challenge the company with giving me a big enough pair for my big hands. ;)

Keep me hands warm*

Nice. It would definitely keep my hands warm. :DD

I always find myself with my hands in my pockets when I should be taking a picture.  The gloves with the tips open to push buttons and adjust the camera would be great.  I have tried the cutting tips off thing and they never come out good for me.  I try them and the still seem clumsy to me.  The gloves from ETRE would be a welcome tool to add to my camera bag.

Handshoes

Always in the market for a new pair of gloves to try. Here in Idaho, they just come with the scenery. Part of life

Last Fall I did a 360 pano and had fingers so numb after 28 shots, that I couldn't get the door open on the vehicle.  lol

Another option

  • March 17, 2010
  • Kenny

Another option is to just get a couple of hand warmers and keep your hands in your pocket when you're not shooting.

yes please!

i'd love a pair of these oh-so-cute and functional gloves!

My girlfriend got me a pair

My girlfriend got me a pair of what we call glittens.

They're fingerless gloves with the end of a mitten sewn on, so you can cover and uncover your fingertips.  Even a tiny one for the thumbs, and textured pads on the palms.  They're absolutely perfect for shooting.

I think she said she got them at Urban Outfitters, of all places.  I guess I'm a hipster now.

The gloves would be very helpful!! If they are rubberized in the palm that would be wonderful! :-)

I tried this last year with a pair of knit gloves from Walmart and all they did was unravel... winning Etre Touchy Gloves would fill my soul with warmth and love.

Well I can't knit so I'll throw my name into the hat and see what happens, if I have to I'll be cutting the tips off my pair of gloves. What a great idea.

I got a pair of fingerless gloves for xmas 2 years ago...

...had velcro straps, not knit...nice fit...lost one within a month. :(  So hopefully I can win a new pair. :)

Great looking gloves

Those look really nice. Great colours and they look much warmer than the fingerless kind I'm currently using. Fingers crossed since we're going into winter and I'd love to have a pair of these!

Very nice

I just did a light painting session 2 days ago, and the cold made me stop after a few hours... If only I had heard of that sooner...

Now, if I could win one of those... that would be awesome !

Now if I win the gloves it will be a bonus.

I never thought to cut the fleece gloves, good idea. But they are kinda slippery, has any one spread silicone sealant on the inner (palm) side for grip? I don't know why it wouldn't work. Please sign me up.

  • Steeple_jackuk

I got some gloves that are brilliant cut downs, but they are more like mittens with no fingers so they do slide about a bit, fingerless is the way to go and even better if its just thumb and pointy fingers.  Why expose too much flesh when its cold.

Sj

nice gloves!

Ahhhh those look nice, much better than my worn out old bicycling gloves.

Love the gloves!

Husband and I have been talking about making something like this for awhile.  Now we'll wait and see if we get a free pair first. :)

Mind sending the gloves to Europe?

It was pretty cold over here in Germany this winter, I could really need a pair of those nice gloves... :-D

I've used various fingerless gloves before, and have even made my own by cutting of finger tips (the gloves, not mine!). These look like a warmer answer!

These gloves look great. Not only stylish but you don't look like a total geek wearing them. (No offense to the total geeks out there!)

I had some made a while ago, where my mom cut and finished up a pair of gloves, knitted, just by removing the fingertips. but a stilish solution like the one from Etre I could use, too :) Even though Spring is almost there the mornings are still soo chilly, would be a pity to loose such beautiful light :)

Glubs

Gimme some of them tipless glubs.

Useful article, thanks. I now have a proper knitted request for Christmas too. Avoiding those awkward home made jumper gift moments. But i love my Mum so it's all good.

I used to make gloves like

I used to make gloves like these. I would only cut through about half of the index and thumb then I would have the option to cover those fingers when I wasn't shooting. I got that Idea from a pair of neoprene hunting gloves that had little holes in the index finger so you could hinge them off when you were ready to shoot.

That is a pretty neat idea. I haven't thought of that. Its definitly hard to try to take a picture with gloves, or no gloves in cold weather.
