Xiaomi’s new AI fixes image exposure and detail in low-quality photos

Chinese company Xiaomi is working on an algorithm that will improve low-quality images. The company wants to compete with Apple regarding smartphone photography, and it has just published a new paper on the AI network called “DeepExposure.” It uses machine learning to improve low-quality images by adding them detail while enhancing colors and brightness.

The researchers from Xiaomi AI Lab have focused on developing an algorithm that retouches low-quality images while preserving color, saturation, exposure, and detail. In the paper, the researchers explain that DeepExposure can “restore most of the details and styles in original images while enhancing brightness and colors.” This method “bridges deep-learning methods and traditional methods of filtering,” which makes it different to other approaches that have been used so far, according to the scientists.

DeepExposure still hasn’t been applied, but we could see it in Xiaomi smartphones in the future. Just like many other smartphone manufacturers, Xiaomi also uses AI in its phones. And apparently, the company is working on ways to make it even more prominent. It looks like, when it comes to smartphone cameras, multiple lenses and computational photography are the main trends, and possibly the future of smartphone photography.
