This is exactly the kind of stuff we never want to see happen.
Mere minutes ago, world champion Alpine skier Marcel Hirscher was almost crushed when a camera drone crashed into the snow just feet behind him as he was taking his second run of the night in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy.
Seen in the above video, an unknown model of drone took a nosedive as the four-time World Cup champion was flying between gates. Thankfully, the drone missed him by mere feet, letting him finish the run unscathed.
In speaking to the Associated Press afterwards, Hirscher said:
This is horrible […] This can never happen again. This can be a serious injury.
We couldn’t help but to agree. This was by no means a smaller, plastic Phantom-style drone with a GoPro attached. This looked to be a far more heavy-duty rig with a more serious camera setup.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the sports world, especially considering the new registration process put in place earlier this week.
