This photographer builds highly realistic miniatures for stunning movie-inspired portraits

It’s not rare that photographers are inspired by other types of art: it can be cinematography, music, painting – you name it. Photographer Nicholas Busch finds his inspiration in movies, and he brings together realistic miniatures, portrait photography, and compositing.

Nicholas builds hyper-realistic dioramas from scratch to create scenes from The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Lord of the Rings and other movies. He then combines them with portraits, and with the help of Photoshop, he creates photos just like scenes we’ve seen on the big screen.

In an interview with SLR Lounge, Nicholas said that he started building small scale models “by accident.” He was doing toy photography and needed a prop for the scene which he couldn’t find. So, he bought everything he needed to build it himself, and as they say, “the rest is history.” From there on, he slowly began to get more into it.

From building a small set, Nicholas went to building recreations of landscapes from his favorite movies. He says that landscape dioramas are what he enjoys most. After building them, he goes on to find a model in local Facebook groups for photography and models.

If you’re wondering about Nicholas’ gear, he uses a Canon 5D Mark IV paired with a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens and a Mefoto tripod. For lighting, he relies on two continuous light softboxes and a Godox AD600Pro studio strobe. He photographs people and dioramas and then brings everything together in Photoshop. And if I may add – he also uses an extensive skill in several different areas: model building, photography, and image compositing.

Take a look at more photos below, and make sure to check out more of Nicholas’ fantastic work on his website, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
