After apparently taking a bit of a break from the limelight, Selena Gomez appears to be back with a new song and a new video to go along with it. It’s received over 80 million views on YouTube so far, and it was shot entirely on the iPhone 11 Pro.
The new song is called Lose You to Love Me, and the video appears to have been some kind of collaboration with Apple themselves. Apple is heavily promoting it on iTunes and Apple Music, not to mention playing up the whole “Shot on iPhone” thing.

Apple has also released their own special edit of the video, which has received a relatively measly 2.5 million views.
The video was shot by award-winning English director Sophie Muller (not “Miller” as misreported on other websites), who has also shot videos for the likes of Annie Lennox, Blur, Radiohead, Sinead O’Connor, Beyoncé, Dido, Maroon 5 and many others. The entirely black and white video is a little different from her usual monochromatic backgrounds with bright colourful subjects.
Macerkopf also posted a very short behind the scenes video showing the setup. It’s quite amusing to see a tiny little iPhone on that massive arm.
Despite being surrounded by a lot of high-end gear, it’s a very simple video, and wouldn’t really stress any camera all that much, even an iPhone camera. Most of the magic is made in the lighting and editing of the video.
The fact that it was shot on a phone is pretty cool, although it’s hardly pushing cinematic limits. It’s just a camera moving forwards and backwards or sitting still, converted to black and white and then cut together in the edit. Given that they had complete control over the lighting (and as a consequence the dynamic range) they probably could’ve shot the same video on an old iPhone SE just fine, too.
