We’ve already seen how creative videos can be made from two different clips side by side. But in their recent commercial, Nike has absolutely nailed it. They repurposed archive footage to create a split-screen ad that not only looks marvelous but also shares an important message.
Since the coronavirus has postponed all sporting events, Nike wanted to point out that, despite the situation, the sport still has the power to unite us. So, their commercial unites archival videos in a sequence of split-screen clips.
The Wieden + Kennedy worked with director Oscar Hudson, editors Peter Wiedensmith and Jessica Baclesse, and the visual effects team at A52. The final video contains only 72 clips combined into 36 moments. But, they were selected from 4,000 sports action sequences! When combined together and followed by Megan Rapinoe’s narration, these clips form an ad that reminds us that, despite the current circumstances, nothing should stop us. We should find new ways to do what we love. And if I dare to say – this doesn’t only apply to sports, but to every other aspect of our lives.
