The Sony ZV-1 now acts as a webcam without any extra software on PC or Mac

Sony first announced back in June 2020 that the Sony ZV-1 vlogging camera would soon be able to act as a USB webcam. Just two months later, they delivered, adding support for not only the ZV-1 but 34 other Sony cameras as well. Now, though, a new firmware update lets you use the ZV-1 as a USB webcam without any other software at all.

The new update means all one has to do is connect their ZV-1 camera to a computer’s USB port and it gets detected as a video capture device just like any other webcam, allowing you to use it natively in applications like OBS, Skype, Zoom or… well, anything that uses a webcam, really. Taht means you won’t need to use Imaging Edge Webcam software anymore.

Filmmaker, gimbal ninja and YouTuber Brandon Li has been playing around with Sony’s new software for the A7S III mirrorless camera and the ZV-1 vlogging camera to see if can actually let us do away with gimbals for shooting video.

The cameras have an accelerometer inside them that allows the camera to record the orientation data of the camera while shooting video. The software on the desktop then reverses these movements in post.

Sony’s ZV-1 vlogging camera, while not perfect, has got a lot of people very interested since its launch in May. It’s an all-in-one camera that offers optical image stabilisation, a flippy out LCD (finally, Sony, thank you!), 4K video up to 30fps, a 24-70mm equivalent field of view lens at f/1.8-2.8 and a microphone socket with a hotshoe on top to mount it.

But it’s about to get even better. During the recent Interview between DPReview and Sony VP Kenji Tanaka, he revealed that a new desktop application is on the way that will turn your Sony ZV-1 into a USB webcam. No HDMI capture device required.

Although pretty much everything was revealed through leaks already, Sony has now officially announced their new Sony ZV-1 compact camera. Essentially, it’s a Sony RX100 V, but with design changes and features that make it particularly suited to vloggers and YouTubers – a not-insignificant chunk of customers for cameras like the Sony’s RX100 series and its competitors.

Hoping to draw some of those customers away from the likes of Canon’s G7X Mark III, the 20-megapixel Sony ZV-1  has a flippy out LCD (not flippy up or down), minimised button layout and improved internal microphone, but with a hotshoe on top and a 3.5mm socket to plug in an external microphone.

Sony UK is teasing an announcement coming in six days and a few hours. The teaser doesn’t say anything about the camera. There’s no model name, no specs, nothing, just a silhouette and a countdown. Although, that silhouette might look slightly familiar to some.

If you spotted the leaked photos claiming to be the new Sony ZV-1 recently, then it’s pretty obvious that it’s going to be the Sony ZV-1 announcement. Sony’s new compact, which appears to essentially be an RX100 VII successor (but with a shorter focal length range) aimed at vloggers.

The first images of the upcoming Sony ZV-1 have leaked, courtesy of Sony Alpha Rumours, and they show an interesting looking camera that would suggest that Sony is finally starting to wake up the massive vlogging market.

Sure, Sony has had a go in the past with strange handle contraptions and finally adding a microphone socket to last year’s RX100 VII. But finally having a flippy out LCD should make life much easier. Oh, and it also has a hotshoe for your top-mounted microphone.
