Panasonic confirms PDAF is coming to MFT

In an interview with Yosuke Yamane, Panasonic’s Imaging and Business division director, Phototrend confirmed that Panasonic plans to implement phase detection autofocus into the Micro Four Thirds product line. According to Yamane, Panasonic now has “all the AF technologies” and will choose “the optimal autofocus method each time”.

This suggests that it may not be available on all future Micro Four Thirds cameras. There’s no word yet on exactly which bodies it will come to, though. PDAF was notably lacking from the Panasonic GH6, but I think it’s probably a safe bet to say that it will almost certainly be coming to the hypothetical Panasonic GH7 and whatever Panasonic eventually releases  to replace the Panasonic Lumix G9.

In a recent interview with DPReview, Yosuke Yamane, Vice President of Panasonic’s Entertainment and Communication business and director of its imaging business unit, spoke about a number of topics in Panasonic’s future. It covers, amongst others, things such as stills vs video, phase-detect autofocus and the role that AI will play in the future of photography. But what was particularly interesting to me was how he spoke about Micro Four Thirds.

What made it interesting to me is the fact that, like many people reading this, I’m a Micro Four Thirds shooter. Granted, I only use MFT for video, but how he describes it – and presumably how Panasonic sees it – is a little different. MFT does offer some obvious benefits for photographers due to its diminutive stature, but that small size also presents other implications. In essence, he described it as a gateway to larger systems.

Panasonic director, Yosuke Yamane, in a video posted to the Panasonic Lumix Video YouTube channel has amongst other things, explained the differences between the goals and target market for the Panasonic GH5 Mark II and the Panasonic GH6 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras.

The video was actually posted on May 26th, the day after the official launch, although it seems to have gone largely unnoticed. But it dives a little deeper into how the Panasonic GH5 as a product is diverging into what is essentially two separate product lines aimed at different types of user. Filmmakers and YouTubers.

The hypothetical Panasonic GH6 has been long-rumoured with little but radio silence from Panasonic. And while the Panasonic GH5 was only released in early 2017, rumours of the GH6 have been around since early 2019. It’s started to feel a little like the Nikon D400.

Recently, in an interview with CineD, Panasonic Imaging director Yasuke Yamane suggested that a GH6 might be on the way. Well, now, Mr Yamane has confirmed that the GH6 is most definitely coming in a new video released by Panasonic explaining their vision for the future of Panasonic’s camera systems and the industry as a whole.

CineD just posted an interview they had with Panasonic’s Director of Imaging Business Unit, Yosuke Yamane. During the interview, they discuss a number of different topics including the influence of coronavirus both on the industry as a whole as well as how it’s affected Panasonic’s production, that 8K camera, and how well the G100 has performed since its release.

The interview was primarily about the new Panasonic S5, but it also offers a glimmer of home for Micro Four Thirds shooters who’ve patiently been waiting for news of a GH5 successor. My Yamane highlights that the GH5 is still a very popular camera and that many creators prefer to shoot in the Micro Four Thirds format and are continuing development of the system.
