Haida’s new PROII 2-in-1 CPL-VND lets you control polarisation separately from neutral density

Variable ND filters aren’t exactly a new thing. Neither are polarisers. In fact, without polarisers, variable ND filters wouldn’t even exist. Pretty much all variable ND filters are the result of cross-polarisation, stacking two polarising filters on top of each other with their relative angles to each other controlling the light that goes through. As such, all Variable ND filters are also polarisers. But most have one big problem. You can’t rotate the polarisation.

There are one or two filters on the market to overcome this, that allow you to rotate the polarisation independent of the overall exposure. And now there’s another one, as Haida has announced its new PROII CPL-VND 2-in-1 filter with 3-7 stops of variable ND stopping power along with a handle that lets you rotate the polarization while maintaining your level of neutral density.

Moment’s Variable ND filters for mirrorless and DSLRs offer great quality at an affordable price

Variable neutral density filters have become invaluable tools for many photographers and filmmakers. They allow us to carry less kit to be able to extend our shutter speed in a variety of lighting conditions vs big holders and multiple square format filters. In recent years, their prices have fallen quite dramatically, too, while their overall quality has greatly improved.

Moment’s recently released variable ND filters have come in at a very attractive price, but do they hold up to scrutiny? With the lockdown in Scotland, I haven’t been able to get out to play with them properly in the wild yet, but I have been able to do some testing to get an idea of their capabilities. So, here’s what I think.

As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
