Adobe has today announced their newest versions of Photoshop Elements 2023 and Premiere Elements 2023 with a bunch of new features to help make the photo and video editing process simpler and easier. The new versions include Adobe Sensei AI-powered features with step-by-step guided edits to help both beginner and advanced users. Elements 2023 also connects with new web and mobile companion apps for editing on the go.

Among the highlighted new AI features in Photoshop Elements 2023 is Moving Elements that you can add to photos, letting you create Cinemagraphs without having to shoot any actual video footage and it’ll export them straight out to social-ready formats. Last year, the music licensing company Artlist acquired software developers FXhome, creators of the popular HitFilm video editing application, amongst others. Since the acquisition, things have been a little quiet, but Artlist has today announced its first software release under the FXhome by Artlist brand that combines video and image editing along with visual effects, revamping the products they took over in the acquisition.

The new update brings with it a new pricing model. Don’t worry, there’s still a 100% free version which includes the basic video editing tools of HitFilm with unlimited exports up to HD and the option to download 10 royalty-free songs, 25 sound effects and 5 templates. But there are also Creator, Pro and Enterprise levels for those with more demanding needs.

Now, I know, you just read the title and thought “Woah!” but before you get too excited, we’re not talking editing features like Premiere Pro or Rush here. We’re talking about a similar type of editing capability to those which you get with still images in Lightroom. Except, you can also trim the in and out points of the video, too, to make those short social media clips.

But yes, Adobe has today announced that Lightroom for both desktop and mobile now has video editing capabilities. Given what I said above, this basically means you get access to presets and slider adjustments along with many of the AI-powered features as well as trimming. Lightroom also sees some other new features, including a Preset Amount slider to dial things back a bit, Adaptive Presets and more.

Confused by colour grading? Watch this complete guide to the basic concepts and tools

Dealing with colour in video is a two-part process. First, you’ve got colour correction. This is the process where you tweak your footage to get things as accurate to real life as you can. It’s also used to match footage shot with multiple cameras to give them all the same standard starting point for the second part of the process, which is colour grading. This is giving the footage your own creative aesthetic spin.

We grade to impart mood or feeling into our sequences. It’s a visual aid to help guide the viewer and put them in the mindset we want them to have while watching. And sometimes it’s just because they look cool. Whatever you’re reasons for doing it, if you’ve never done it before, it can feel a little intimidating, so the guys at Film Riot put together this “Color Grading 101” video to teach you all of the basic concepts of grading.

Dubbed the “DaVinci Resolve Cloud Update”, Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty talks about a lot more than just DaVinci Resolve, including a few new hardware products. But the main event is the announcement of DaVinci Resolve 18 Public Beta and its new cloud collaboration features.

Along with Blackmagic Cloud support, DaVinci Resolve 18 sees new features for the Color, Edit, Fusion and Fairlight tabs, to add some crazy new AI features, tracking for deforming surfaces, new video effects, automatic proxy generation, major Fusion performance improvements and better audio processing. The DaVinci Resolve 18 public beta is available to download in both free and paid Studio flavours.

No matter how experienced we might get with editing video, it’s easy to get complacent, especially if you’re creating video content regularly for platforms like YouTube and other social media. We start to get sloppy, make mistakes, and our videos suddenly aren’t as popular as they once were. And for those just starting out, you might still be trying to figure out how you can get your videos seen and shared in the first place.

Well, Matti Haapoja is here to help. In this video, he walks us through five of the biggest mistakes that you can make when video editing, particularly for social media. I have to admit, I’m guilty of making a few of these mistakes myself and they can creep up on you without you even realising you’re doing it.

For anybody who edits video, it’s a process that constantly changes and evolves. We’re always learning new things, new and better (sometimes worse) ways to do things than we did before. There are always new techniques to experiment with to see if they fit our style, our workflow and the videos we’re trying to create. But it can be a slow and inefficient process sometimes.

But in this video, Mark Bone gives us five great tips to not only work a little smarter and faster but to also help us tell better stories with our edits. And while he touches on some topics that have been covered before, like shortcut keys, Mark takes things a step further to tell you which shortcut keys specifically are the most advantageous to learn and remember while you’re editing to speed up your workflow.

Colour grading nighttime footage can be difficult. You’ve often got a lot of contrast to deal with, particularly when light sources appear in your shot and the camera often doesn’t see the muted nighttime colours (or the bright lights!) the same way we do with our eyes. While there are a lot of great in-depth tutorials out there for serious colour grading, sometimes you just need a “quick fix”.

In this video, Stephen from Stephen and Janaka walks us through a quick colour grading process for nighttime footage in Adobe Premiere Pro that literally only takes a couple of minutes to apply.
