Instagram responds to video-focus backlash by testing portrait orientation photos in feeds

The whole Instagram debacle over recent weeks with its focus on video content and the whole full-screen redesign – which now appears to have been halted – has caused it a lot of grief. The backlash from users has been quite vocal. After all, Instagram’s success grew off the back of the fact that it was a photo-sharing app and despite competition from apps like TikTok, that’s what Instagram users still seem to want.

It looks, though, that Instagram might have actually taken the response into account and is currently testing taller aspect ratio photos so that the photos in your streams can take up as much of the screen as Instagram Reels currently do. Whether or not that’ll be enough to appease users remains to be seen, but we’ve only been asking Instagram for the ability to post portrait orientation images for about a decade, so maybe.

How I shot these vertical panoramic images in the world’s most stunning churches and cathedrals

Vertical Churches of the World is a project that began in 2012 in New York. It’s been ongoing since then and the project has been featured by numerous news agencies, blogs and articles from around the globe (including here on DIYP). I felt it was now time to put some of the images into a book, which you can find here, and I thought I’d put this article together to explain a little about how I create them.

When entering a church, mostly in the Gothic style because of the lengthy nave, try and find the center of the aisle. If you are lucky enough to be able to use a tripod to shoot, set up a bit closer to the front of the church’s altar and try and capture the dome above the altar. If you are shooting free-hand, find the same spot closer to the altar. Your goal is to capture in a panorama the whole church vertically from the altar to the narthex (the back of the church) while shooting the ceiling along the way.

So, Samsung has gone and done it. They’ve singlehandedly destroyed the “You don’t watch TV vertically do you? So, why do you shoot video vertically?” argument. Yes, they’ve announced a vertical TV. And it costs $1,600 (not $16,000 as some sources are reporting).

The Perfect Perspective for Photographing Churches

Anybody who has visited one of the grandiose churches or cathedrals has come across this problem; how do you photograph the sheer size and magnificence of this holy architecture?

If you capture the chancel, you miss out on the ceiling murals. Try photographing the murals and you’ll probably be giving up on most of the stained glass.

One way to capture as much as possible would be a 360-degree panorama but that will result in a very distorted imaged with some of the most impressive features of the building – the ceiling, murals and unique lighting fixtures, left out of the frame.

Obviously such detail-filled gargantuan structures require an out-of-the-box solution, and this is where travel photographer Richard Silver (previously) and his vertical panoramas come into play.
