Canada-based model suffers severe burns during fire photo shoot gone bad

Using fire in photography is not a new idea. But it’s one that requires the utmost respect. We’ve featured a number of photographers here on DIYP who work with fire the right way, including this one from Von Wong, who had a crew of around 50 people helping to maximise safety and be able to respond quickly in the event of an accident. Not everybody is as well planned, though.

22-year-old international student and freelance model Robyn-Lee Jansen is currently residing in a Vancouver hospital recovering from first and second-degree burns as the result of what she describes as “negligence and recklessness on the unnamed photographer’s behalf”. And, if Jansen’s account is true, I’m inclined to agree.

This photographer makes images from inside his camera

Most of us hold our cameras. Or mount them on a tripod. Either way, most of us are on the outsides of our cameras. For Canadian photographer Ross den Otter, though, stepping inside his camera is exactly how he makes his portraits. Needless to say, it’s a rather large one.

Ross uses a camera obsurace. Essentially a large room with a hole in one wall. In this hole a large format lens is mounted, which projects the outside scene onto a wall on the inside. Using photographic paper, one can capture that projected image. Because of the nature of a camera obscura, Ross was able to also use it as his darkroom. This meant that paper could go straight from the wall to the developing tray. A few minutes later, he could emerge with the finished print.

World’s Largest Negative Was Exposed In A Camera Obscura Built Inside A Vacant Storage Facility

Joel Nicholas, a Vancouver based photographer, has been up to something really cool. He’s been working on a photo series called Blueprints for Observation, where he transformed an old downtown self storage building into four different camera obscuras: one each on a north, east, south, and west facing wall. The storage facility was destined to be demolished, which provided Nicholas a little more freedom to really take his build to the next level. By building blacked out rooms on the interior of the storage facility and drilling a tiny aperture into an 8-inch thick wall of reinforced concrete, Nicholas was able to capture a near 360-degree view of Vancouver using his gigantic “disposable camera”.[Read More…]

A couple years ago, Eric Veloso was sitting in his car in a parking lot in Vancouver, beating back the feeling of dread as he mentally prepared himself to start work at his day job. Not a bad job, but still a job that Veloso did not want to be at. It wasn’t his passion in life and did little in the way of nourishing his creative aspirations. That, of course, is not an uncommon feeling to have, perhaps you, too, are familiar with it. When a routine becomes so dull, so unfulfilling it just sits there heavily, like a rock, in the bottom of your stomach, until finally, one day, you realize just how much it’s weighing you down. and wearing you out. It’s like an epiphany when that happens. All of the sudden a light bulb turns on and there’s a moment of clarity, followed shortly afterwards by an overwhelming sense of relief and freedom.[Read More…]
