Godox redefines flash with a new 200Ws tube addon for the AD200/AD200Pro

Godox has announced their newest Godox AD-S200 head for the Godox AD200 (buy here) and AD200Pro (buy here) strobes. Unlike just about every other flash or strobe you may have seen in the past, though, this one’s a tube.

Flashes and strobes have historically been available in two basic designs. Either a small bulb sitting behind a Fresnel lens (speedlights) or they’re of the “bare bulb” variety (studio strobes). This adds new creative options.

I am a studio photographer and I don’t want to use flash anymore

Vlad Moldovean with LED tubelights

As a passionate photographer, I started my journey years ago by transforming my bedroom into a DIY studio. With nothing but a bucket of paint and a wall, I created a simple yet effective backdrop for my shoots. Due to financial constraints, I began with speedlights. But as I grew in skill and experience, I added three studio 100w heads to my arsenal.

While I was always fascinated by complex lighting setups, for some inexplicable reason, I never found studio heads to be my favorite. Nevertheless, since they added up as more lights, I kept using them. As time went on, I became more interested in the cinematic aspect of photography. I began experimenting with various light fixtures to use as practicals in my shots. It was during this period that I discovered LED lights, and my interest in them was sparked.

Godox Announces KNOWLED RGBWW Pixel LED Tubes & Wireless DMX Tx/Rx

Godox has announced its new KNOWLED line of RGBWW Pixel Tube LED lights. Coming in three sizes, we’ve got the TP2R, TP4R and TP8R, measuring around 2ft, 4ft and 8ft, respectively. The first two are already available to pre-order. However, no price has yet been announced for the latter of the three, and the Godox website simply says “8′ to be availble” (the typo is theirs).

Also announced is the Godox TimoLink wireless DMX transmitter and receiver system. This essentially converts a wired DMX console to wireless by sending and receivings signals to and from CRMX-compatible fixtures or transmitters/receivers. The system employs frequency hopping to eliminate interference, even in busy location and complex setups, to provide wireless control up to a distance of 300 metres.

LED tubes have become tremendously popular over the last couple of years. We’ve seen them released by Godox, Nanlite, Digitalfoto and a number of other companies but Aputure seems to have abstained from the party… Until now. The company has now announced the new Aputure Amaran T2C and T4C RGBWW LED tubes along with a pair of 2×1′ (Amaran F21) and 2×2′ (Amaran F22) flexible and bendable LED panels.

There doesn’t appear to be a promo video on the Aputure YouTube channel yet, but they did live stream the launch of the new items. The two tubes come in 20W and 40W varieties for the T2C and T4C respectively and allow you to produce just about any colour you can imagine. They have 46 built-in gel presets as well as 15 lighting effects as well as DMX (through an adapter) and Sidus Link remote control.

Tubelights are becoming ever more popular. The last player to join the game is IWATA (whom we remember for their excellent mini panel). Actually, the mini panel was so good and ubiquitous that “IWATA panel” became a generic name for those mini bi-color lights. It seems that that panel was retired, but we were thrilled to learn that IWATA is now making tube-style lights. They sent us two of their new light panels, the 32 cm Master-R light and the 23 cm Master-S light. TL;DR – we were impressed.
