Canon EOS R5 Transformers now available outside of Japan

In August of last year, Takara Tomy and Canon teased something new. Two Canon EOS R5 “cameras” that transform into either an Autobot or a Decepticon transformer. At the time, it seemed that the items would only be being released in Japan, but now, it looks like they’re hitting a wider release. They’ve also added a third Canon Transformer to the collection, too!

Joining Optimus Prime and Refraktor is Nemesis Prime. This one also transforms into a Canon EOS R5, making the set of three look pretty much identical when they’re “in disguise”. But when they transform into robots, the three look quite distinct with their unique colouring.

The threat from the Decepticons never seems to go away – at least, it won’t if Michael Bay gets his way. In what might seem an unlikely but very welcome pairing, Canon has teamed up with Takara Tomy – the company behind the Transformers toys) to produce Canon EOS R5 mirrorless cameras that are actually Transformers. At a quick glance, these EOS R5 cameras with lenses look quite convincing but up close, it’s easy to spot their secret.

There appear to be two models of the “camera”. One is an Autobot which, naturally, turns into Optimus Prime R5 while the other turns into Decepticon Reflector R5. Obviously, these aren’t real functional cameras and they’re 80% scale compared to the real thing. They’re also not too terribly expensive if you’re a collector of these sorts of things. They’re probably not the kinds of toys you’d buy for your young child, though.

You should probably just go ahead and clear the next 15 minutes of your schedule as I’m pretty sure you’re going to want to check out this epic Transformers stop motion movie.  Even if you’re not a fan of the classic Transformers franchise, it’s hard to resist all the work that went into making this ridiculously awesome fan film.

The filmmaker and stop motion extraordinaire, Harris Loureiro, told us he shot the film entirely on a Canon 1000D over the course of six months. Since each individual motion has to be done by hand in between photographs, he said it would often take him about two hours and forty minutes just to get a usable 8 second clip (and, may we add, the movie is over 15 minutes long!).[Read More…]
