Right now, most of us can’t shoot what we normally would. And yet, we may still feel the need to be creative and take photos. This is when trying new genres comes to the rescue and macro photography is certainly perfect for when you’re stuck safe at home.

Like all landscape photographers, Thomas Heaton can’t travel and shoot what he usually does. So he also turned to macro photography at home. But it turned out to be way more challenging than he thought!

It’s a debate that’s gone on for as long as photography has been around. Does the gear matter? Photographer Erik Wahlstrom wanted a definitive answer to this question, and enlisted the help of five well known photographers; Thomas Heaton, Christine Bartolucci, Alan Brock, Dan Bullman and Ben Horne.

Each of them provide their own answers to this question. And they do vary a bit, but they all seem to suggest the same thing. Yes, the gear matters. Although probably not for the reason you might think. It’s not about having the latest and greatest kit. It’s about having the gear that gives you the results you want.

Travelling to make photographs can be challenging. One of the big tasks is figuring out what to pack. You want to pack as little as possible, but you don’t want to leave vital gear at home. In this video, landscape photographer Thomas Heaton talks about the equipment he’s travelled with to spend time shooting landscapes in Hawaii.

Thomas is very clear. This isn’t “travel photography”, this is “travelling to do photography” and there’s a difference. It’s not the kind of kit you’d want to pack for a trek up a mountain. There just wouldn’t be enough room left in the bag for all the extra kit you’d want. But, it is a handy set of gear for travelling between wherever you’re staying and wherever you’re going to shoot.

This is a topic that seems to come up every few years. As sensors increase in dynamic range, ND grads sometimes aren’t so essential. Raw processing software becomes more capable with each new release. Even filters that cut through haze aren’t always needed. But what about things like circular polarisers and big ND filters for super long exposures?

In this video, landscape photographer Thomas Heaton offers his insight and thoughts on the question. When it comes to polarisers, Thomas is of the opinion that they absolutely are necessary. It’s an opinion I share. The function that they serve just cannot be reproduced in post. But what about the rest? Watch the video to find out.

So often, we see videos of photographers sharing about the creation of their images after the fact.  While this is great for presenting the information in a more detailed and refined fashion, it’s easy to lose some of the uniqueness that went into the whole process.

Photographer Thomas Heaton, on a recent trip to Iceland, filmed his process in real time.  In the video, he gives us a true glimpse behind the lens, discussing the use of polarizers, neutral density filters, and delayed exposure to create a series of stunning images from the beautiful landscape.
