First impressions of the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD Lens

Working on hitting the trifecta, Tamron has released a new lens which includes a very respectable 70-210mm focal range, a quality packaged compact footprint, and a price targeted at starting shooters. The folks at Midwest Photo and Tamron were kind enough to provide me with a pre-release copy, so I happily took it for a spin.

Before we get too deep into my first impressions, let me tell you that I wouldn’t normally consider a lens in this focal range, with anything less than a f/2.8 aperture available to me. I decided it would be worth considering what this lens had to offer, so here we are. I won’t jump to the conclusion just yet, but let me quickly summarize here and let you know that I enjoyed shooting with this lens and it has some surprising features in store for its price point.

WPPI has been a good one this year for gear announcements. We’ve got the very impressive looking new Sony A7III camera and a whole slew of new E-Mount Art series lenses from Sigma. A couple of new entry level bodies from Canon as well as the new EOS M50 mirrorless. We’ve also seen a new AD200 competitor appear from Cactus who say it’s only just the beginning. Oh yeah, and then there’s that funny robotic speedlight from Canon.

There were a few items we didn’t cover, though. So, let’s have a look at everything that was announced. All the stuff we told you about and all the stuff we didn’t in one place.

After a few pictures leaked out yesterday and today’s earlier announcement of the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for Sony, Tamron now give us the 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD lens for Nikon and Canon DSLRs. A slightly slower, lighter weight alternative to the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2.

Aimed at the budget conscious shooter who doesn’t need that extra stop of aperture, the new 70-210mm f/4 boasts some great performance and features to help those hoping to keep their rig fairly light.

Images leaked of the upcoming Tamron 70-210mm F/4 Di VC USD lens

Nokishita seems to be on a roll lately. More leaks than a screen door on a submarine. This time it’s the impending Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD lens. But Nokishita aren’t the only people who’ve managed to get their hands on some. Canon Watch has also released a different set of leaked images.

Beyond the images, there’s not really any information other than the lens will be available for Nikon and Canon. There’s a switch to go between autofocus and manual focus, as well as a switch to turn Vibration Control on and off. Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be a focus limiter switch, commonly found on lenses with such range to prevent hunting at short distances.
