Capture One explains its confusing new “Loyalty Program” and it’s not amazing but it’s not terrible, either

In December, Capture One announced that they were ditching their annual release cycle, changing its perpetual license model and switching primarily to a subscription model with more frequent releases. It’s a good compromise between only offering infrequent updates vs the lifelong subscription model of companies like Adobe and Autodesk. Capture One was offering the best of both worlds.

The only question that remained was over the announced “Loyalty Program” (or “Loyalty Scheme”, as it was called then) for Capture One users. The details hadn’t been published yet, although we knew it would be replacing the standard upgrade pricing system available under previous versions. Well, now, Capture One has published exactly what it all means and how it impacts you, the user.

Capture One is changing its perpetual license and ditches annual release cycle but it’s not as bad as it sounds

Capture One has sent out an email to customers stating that changes are coming to its perpetual license model. It’s doing a bit of an Adobe and switching over to a primarily subscription-based approach, with new features being added to the application as they’re developed and become available rather than doing a major update each year. This has a few implications for existing perpetual license holders, but it’s not really a bad thing.

The new method of updating the application regularly with new features and there no longer being an annual release cycle means that we won’t see a Capture One 24 being released next year. Perpetual licenses will not see new features coming, either, although they will receive bug fixes. Upgrade pricing is also going to be disappearing, too, in favourite of a mysterious “loyalty scheme” model.

Earlier this year, Instagram released Subscriptions, an option that looks a lot like Patreon or YouTube’s “Join” feature. Now it’s expanding it even further allowing creators to share posts only with those who are ready to pay up for the content.

Subscriptions used to cover only Stories and live streams, but you can now post photos or Reels only for the chosen ones. You can even send messages only to your subscribers who pay to see your content.

Adobe’s been getting a lot of press lately. Some good, but mostly bad. It’s caused a lot of people to become very upset, particularly people on Twitter who don’t understand what the word “subscription” means and think they’re still buying a perpetual license. Regardless, it’s bound to have lost Adobe a few subscribers.

To help draw in some fresh ones, though, Adobe is knocking 40% off the “All Apps” package in at least the USA and the UK. The regular $52.99/mo US package drops to $29.99/mo, and the UK’s £49.94 package comes down to a somewhat more manageable £30.34/mo.
