Slow Mo Guys team up with Steve Giralt to film super fast robots in super slow motion

I wondered how long it’d be before these two did some kind of collaboration and now it’s finally here. We’re big fans of The Slow Mo Guys here at DIYP, who use Phantom cameras to show us events recorded in super slow motion, letting us see new things that our eyes simply aren’t capable of spotting in real-time. As well as the obvious visual appeal, the insights into physics and how things work is just fascinating.

Somebody else we’re big fans of is Steve Giralt. We’ve featured Steve’s work on DIYP a number of times. He also shoots slow motion with Phantom cameras, but he mounts them onto the end of super fast Bolt robot arms for commercial work. Gav from The Slow Mo Guys visited Steve and his team in New York to see how the whole system works and to create some pretty epic slow-motion shots.

You thought this 7-Eleven commercial was CG but it was really shot using a giant robot arm

I’m not entirely sure how recently the above commercial for 7-Eleven was released (I’m in the UK, not many hhere), but when I first saw it, I thought for sure that it was just some pretty neat CG. It turns out, though, that it was actually shot 100% practically and for real by none other than Steve Giralt and his team. Yeah, I know, I was quite surprised, too.

While a computer was used to previsualize and programme the moves, the actual sequence was shot on a Bolt motion control robot arm. I can’t quite tell what the camera was (some shade of RED, most likyle), but the lens used appears to be the Tokina Cinema Vista 16-28mm II T3 cine.

This insane camera rig spins a Phantom slow motion camera at 150rpm (32mph)

Steve Giralt is pretty well known for pushing things to the extreme when it comes to super slow-motion video. This time, though, he’s gone way overboard, by making a rig that spins a Phantom VEO 4K high-speed camera around a platform at 150 revolutions per minute.

The rig was made to film Jack Daniel’s Honey. They wanted to show a piece of lime spinning as it was falling into the drink as the whole thing was rotating around in front of the camera. Naturally, they couldn’t easily spin the lime as it fell, and they couldn’t really spin the drink, so the solution was obvious. Spin the camera.

Visual engineer and photographer Steve Giralt makes videos exactly like this and he uses high-speed robotic cameras in his work. They allow him to do lots of awesome stuff, and in this video from B&H, he takes you behind the scenes to show you how it’s done.

This filmmaker used “exploding” sand to create powerful imagery sending a message of unity

The message of unity and togetherness is a good and strong one to get across, especially right now. United Not Divided, from filmmaker Steve Giralt carries this message beautifully. And as impressive as the message itself is presented, how he created it is equally as awesome.

You might remember Steve’ from the also amazing Burger Drop video we posted about a little while ago. As you can probably tell, he’s no stranger to thinking a little differently in order to come up with unique visuals. In that video, Steve used a DIY Arduino solution to get everything timed up. This time, he utilises some DIY liquid cooled LED lights which really bring the flying sand to life.

This is how they shot the amazing super slow motion burger drop

Food can be a difficult subject to photograph. There’s all kinds of things to take into account about the colour and texture of the food. You’ve got to make it look appetising to the camera, even if it doesn’t always look that way in real life. Shooting a single frame is difficult enough. So, imagine adding computer controlled knives, robot arm and a slow motion camera into the mix.

Then imagine dropping all the components of your meal from various heights and having them land perfectly. All this, while trying to keep it looking appetising throughout. Well, that’s exactly what director and visual engineer Steve Giralt did in his Deconstructed Burger Concept video.
