A recent study exploring the gender bias in the photography industry has reported that despite comprising almost half of the photography-related workforce, women photographers are dramatically under-represented and lower paid than male photographers.

This bias covers the industry as a whole, from day to day work and harassment, to the representation by major camera brands and news outlets. To coincide with International Women’s Day, the marketing company Wallflower Studios commissioned the report titled “Give us Features, not Flowers“. It makes for some interesting and somewhat sobering reading.

Chinese fashion photographer Chen Ma was criticised for perpetuating Western stereotypes of Chinese women in her latest campaign image for fashion brand Dior. The image was labelled as “insulting” to Chinese women as they do not posses the fair skin and big, round eyes, and that it was racist.

“The Grand Tour” comically illustrated three types of wildlife photographers, and they nailed it

There are different types of photographers, that’s for sure. I don’t know if there are only two of them or as many as 30, but one can certainly take a comical twist on the differences between photographers. This is exactly what guys from The Grand Tour did. In this video, Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May got together, playing wildlife photographers who compare the gear they bought. It’s absolutely hilarious, and some of you will probably recognize themselves in it.

It’s the ladies turn as pixelcrush_ca’s new series targets the “Typical Female Photographers” everybody knows

You know, it’s funny. When we featured Mike Roshuk’s last series on typical male photographers I was expecting more people to be offended. At least, I was expecting more men to be offended. Funny thing, though, it was women who seemed to be upset that they’d been left out.

Well, by popular demand, Mike has now made a series on typical female photographers that everyone knows. If the groups I’m in on Facebook are anything to go by, this is by no means an exhaustive list, but I definitely recognise every single one of these. I imagine you probably do, too. Or, perhaps, if you’re a female photographer, you can identify with at least one of them.

Every so often, something comes along in the name of parody that really hits home. In my time working with a camera, I’ve come across every single one of these at some point or other. This wonderful series of illustrations were created by Mike Roshuk at pixelcrush_ca and while they do play on stereotypes, we’ve almost certainly all met them at some point.

We’ve featured Mike’s work here on DIYP before, and it’s really excellent. Hopefully, you’re not one of the photographers featured in his latest series. Or, at least strive to not be one of these. But on the off chance that you haven’t met any of these people in your photographic journey, watch out, one of them might just be you.
