Sports photographers face all sorts of crazy, unpredictable, and dangerous situations on the job. And recently, a photographer did a police job during a college football game.

When a fan ran onto the stage, the photographer sprinted toward him and tackled them to the ground. The man tried to escape, but the photographer was persistent and kept tackling him to the floor. The entire incident was caught on camera from different angles, showing this rather weird and potentially dangerous incident.

What immediately springs to mind when you think of racquet sports? The excitement of the match? The incredible athletic skill required? Or perhaps the weird grunting that often seems to accompany it? Well not for Award-winning Australian Photographer, Brad Walls. The New York-based photographer has released a new series titled ‘Vacant’. Like his previous series “Pools from Above“, it draws inspiration from his fascination with surrealism and geometric art.

DIYP caught up with Brad to find out more about his new work, what inspires him to create, and what exciting projects he has up his sleeve for the future.

When photographing sports, you always have to be ready to catch the perfect moment with your camera. And judging from the Tuesday night ceremonial first pitch, you also have to be ready to catch the ball with your camera, quite literally. This is what happened to photographer Darren Georgia, whose camera got the direct hit from “the worst first pitch ever.”

During an Alabama-Arkansas game this Saturday, ESPN removed some camera operators from their positions in Razorback Stadium because of a bad weather. As a result, only wide-angle view was broadcasted, which made the players look like ants. And expectedly, the Internet had no mercy when it comes to cheeky tweets.

What would it look like if tens, hundreds, even thousands, of different moments from a sports game happened all at the same time? This is perhaps the best possible explanation of a brilliant series of images by photographer Pelle Cass. For the project titled “Crowded Fields,” he visits local college games and takes thousands of photos. He later merges them into single images, giving a chaotic and brilliant twist to sports photography.

I have noticed a growing demand for fitness photography recently – which I am taking as confirmation of a fun new rising photography trend: fitness portraits.

(Other recent photography trends include: Anne Geddes babies, black and white baby parts, smash the cake, trash the dress, pet portraits, maternity boudoir, boudoir boudoir, seniors, crazy wedding composites…and so on…)

I’m sure some will complain about selfie culture, body obsession or whatever – but as a photographer I’m seeing a fantastic opportunity to earn some easy money. [Read More…]

Every once in a while it’s nice to get a wakeup call that reminds you how much of photography is really just standing in front of more interesting stuff (quote courtesy of Mr. Jim Richardson – because when you’re this good they call you mister).

So the other day, whilst discussing my quest to photograph more interesting stuff, a good friend of mine says: “Hey – do you want to take some fat bike photos?”

First question: “What the heck is a fat bike?”

Second question: “Where are we going to photograph you riding a bike? Its January and there’s a foot of snow outside.
