Sony’s Xperia 1 III and 5 III smartphones sport a 70-105mm equivalent periscope zoom lens

Sony has announced its two newest smartphones, the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III, both of which contain a triple-rear camera setup with a hybrid zoom lens offering the equivalent field of view to that of a 70-105mm focal length range on a full-frame body at its extremes. It also contains the usual standard 24mm and ultra-wide 16mm equivalent field of view cameras.

The variable focal length of the “hybrid” zoom system is thanks to a periscope system built into the camera module which physically moves the elements closer to or further away from the sensor. It seems to offer minimum and maximum focal lengths on the zoom, but nothing in between – for which it reverts to digital processes.

Sony teases the Xperia PRO smartphone with HDMI input for pro photographers and filmmakers

Sony has announced a new Xperia 1 flagship phone, the Xperia 1 II. It’s got 8GB of RAM, a 6.5″ AMOLED 3840 x 1644 21:9 screen, a 4,000mAh battery, four cameras on the back, one on the front and 256GB of storage space. It even has a headphone jack! But that’s not the most interesting bit of news to come from the Sony smartphone camp.

They’ve also teased the Xperia PRO; A smartphone specifically aimed at professional photographers and filmmakers, it features an HDMI input to take a video feed from your camera.

Sony’s Xperia phones have been struggling. Of that, there is no doubt. With strong competition from the likes of Apple, Huawei, Samsung, LG and others, they’ve just not been able to keep up. Wccf Tech reports that while many believed that Sony would simply close or sell off their struggling smartphone division, they’re actually merging it into the Sony TV, audio and camera product lines.
