Teased in September, Sony’s successor to the FS5 Mark II, the Sony FX6 has now officially been announced. As expected, the Super 35mm sensor of the FS5 Mark II has been upgraded to a new 4K 10.2-megapixel full-frame BSI CMOS Exmore R sensor. It offers “Ultra-high sensitivity” with an ISO expandable up to 409,600 for low light and offers 15+ stops of dynamic range.

The camera weighs in at a mere 890g and looks a lot like the FX9 in style and layout, only significantly smaller and around half the weight. The price tag is also a little lighter, too, with the FX6 coming in at $5,998.

Sony has announced the launch of its new Cinema Line – a series of cameras for what Sony describes as “a wide range of content creators”, which will kick off with the full-frame Sony FX6 – successor to the popular Sony FS5 Mark II – due to go on sale before the end of 2020. Well, sort of, it’ll be the first brand new camera in the new Cinema Line.

The existing 6K Sony FX9 is also being incorporated in the new Cinema lineup, although we will see a new “Version 3 upgrade” at some point in 2021. The Sony Venice is the third partner in the Cinema Line. That too will see a Version 6.0 upgrade, which Sony says “will improve its operability in broadcast and live environments”.

Atomos has announced that an update is coming for the Atomos Shogun 7 monitor recorder that adds ProRes RAW recording support when used with the Sony FX9 full-frame camcorder and XDCA-FX9 extension module. The FX9 is also soon to receive an update providing RAW video output over SDI in a variety of formats and frame rates. Initially, the Shogun 7 will offer ProRes RAW for 4K 60fps and 2K at up to 180 frames per second.

This new update expands the Shogun 7’s ability to record ProRes RAW from Sony cameras which already includes support for the FS7, FS7 II, FS5 and FS5 II. Unfortunately, though, it looks like FX9 shooters won’t get to try it until at least October.
