I’ve always had a lot of fun challenging myself with creative and/or technical limitations. Like giving myself a photo assignment to spend the day or even an entire vacation with a certain camera/lens combination and a limited shooting style, like to shoot only macro or only black and white, etc. It usually makes me work harder to get the shots, but more importantly, I often come home with photos I probably wouldn’t have if I had taken my best equipment and approached shooting in my usual way. And who knows, what if through an exercise of self-imposed creative or technical limitations, I accidentally “stumble on a style”?! Which is exactly what happened to me and why I’m suggesting you try it yourself!

We’re starting to see more and more sample footage from the much anticipated Sony A7R ii, which is due to start shipping August 5th. U.K. based photographer, Jon Roberts, recently got his hands on one of the cameras and was nice enough to whip up this noise test, which compares the A7R II to it’s predecessor the A7R and, also, a Canon 5D MKiii. Roberts’ notes “that this wasn’t a very scientific test under lab circumstances…more of a rough and ready preview!”; however, it’s still a solid comparison with 100% crops.

The same goes for the rolling shutter test video Roberts has shared with us, which you’ll see farther down in this post along with an unboxing video–but, we’ll get to those in a minute.

First, take a look at the noise test. You can click the image to open a full size version in a new browser windor, or take a look at it over on Flickr.[Read More…]

With the sensitivity of the Sony a7S reaching up to an ISO of 409600, the camera itself has had some pretty high expectations to live up to. Just recently, Photographer Yosh Enatsu took the a7S out for a test run and uploaded some results showing what the camera truly can be capable of. Considering the a7S doesn’t have its own internal 4K codec, the shots were done through a setup utilizing an external Blackmagic converter. Filmed in the middle of the night, the final two videos we see paint an impressive image of what the a7S can do.
