Why I’m Not Ditching My DSLR for a Sony A7R II

Before I even start this article, we need to add a disclaimer – if you love charts and graphs and full resolution comparisons, or if you have a visceral emotional attachment to your gear and/or need validation for your purchase decisions from the internet – you might want to move on to the next post.

However, if you are willing to have a rational discussion on why it might not be the best idea to ditch your current DSLR for a shiny new Sony A7R II, please continue reading!

The release of the Sony AR7 II has generated quite a bit of excitement in the photography community (to say the least).

And for good reason, looking at the specs, its a beast of a camera – everything you could possibly want.

However, in this article I am going to explain why I am not switching to a Sony A7R II (or a Fuji X-T1 either for that matter) any time soon.

Sony A7r II Noise Comparison And Rolling Shutter Test

We’re starting to see more and more sample footage from the much anticipated Sony A7R ii, which is due to start shipping August 5th. U.K. based photographer, Jon Roberts, recently got his hands on one of the cameras and was nice enough to whip up this noise test, which compares the A7R II to it’s predecessor the A7R and, also, a Canon 5D MKiii. Roberts’ notes “that this wasn’t a very scientific test under lab circumstances…more of a rough and ready preview!”; however, it’s still a solid comparison with 100% crops.

The same goes for the rolling shutter test video Roberts has shared with us, which you’ll see farther down in this post along with an unboxing video–but, we’ll get to those in a minute.

Sony A7R II: 42.4MP, Full Frame 4K and 5-axis Stabilization for $3,200

Ever since Sony announced the A7II we were waiting for the rest of the A7 line to get their updates. And today Sony announced the next camera to get an update, the Sony A7R II.

While the A7R was no small gun, it looks like the A7RII is bringing the technology up to date from the 2013 version.

The camera features a full frame BSI CMOS sensor @ 42.4 MP, and like the A7II features a 5 Axis image stabilization, and 4K video at 30FPS.  Another advancement are phase detection elements on the sensor to cater for faster and better autofocus (and just like its predecessor, the camera will work with other brands lenses).
