A 43-megapixel 8K Sony sensor has been “leaked” but could it possibly be real?

Recently, word of a new Sony IMX671AQR sensor was “leaked” via the Fuji Rumors comments. There isn’t much info about it except for what appears to be a screenshot of the first page of a datasheet. That screenshot details a 43-megapixel APS-C camera capable of shooting 12-bit 8K video. But is it for real?

Doubt is starting to be cast on the legitimacy of the leak on a number of sites, and I’m inclined to agree. Given that we’ve still yet to see a replacement for the ageing Sony A7S II or even a legit hint of a new sensor for a theoretical A7S III, I can’t imagine they’d be packing this much power into an APS-C sized sensor already.

Two new Sony APS-C cameras expected this month, including long rumoured A7000

When Sony announced the A7R IV last month, many were expecting it to be the long-overdue A7S III or the “Baby A9” high-end APS-C body that’s been rumoured for a long time. Neither of those things happened, but according to Sony Alpha Rumors, at least one of them will before the end of this month.

They say that they’ve received information from trusted sources confirming that Sony will announce a pair of new APS-C E Mount cameras at the end of this month. The A6500 is apparently going end-of-life, and so a replacement, naturally, would be on the way.

Sony gearing up to announce the A7R IV later today, rumour suggests

Japanese website Nokishita says that Sony has begun editing product pages for an “ILCE-7RM4” camera (the expected product code for a future Sony A7R IV). There’s an official announcement expected from Sony later today, in just a couple of hours, in fact via Alpha Universe, where we may expect to hear that the Sony A7R IV is on the way. And possibly other cameras, too.

New leaked A7000 specs and photos show a 32MP camera that shoots 10-Bit 4K 60fps video

While announcement date rumours aren’t always that reliable, the spec sheets often are, especially as we get closer to (or past) those expected announcement dates. Sony Rumors just posted a new list of specs along with some photos they discovered through Weibo for the new Sony A7000, which will be announced either during CES next week, or later in January 2019.
