New firmware brings 8K 4:2:2 10-bit video and lossless compressed raw to the Sony A1

Sony has released a new Version 1.3 firmware update for its flagship Sony Alpha A1 mirrorless camera. The new update brings 8K 4:2:2 10-bit video recording capabilities from 8.6K oversampling. While the Sony A1 did already have 10-bit recording capabilities, it was only 4:2:0, so the new update offers a lot more latitude in post for colour correction and grading as well as for tools like chroma-keying.

The Sony A1 also receives lossless compressed raw format still files, although the A1 isn’t the only camera to see a new firmware update. The Sony A7S III also sees a new Version 2.1 firmware which adds proxy footage recording while operating the camera remotely via computer as well as Eye AF performance improvements.

Sony A1 that took Olympic tumble actually survived

Last week we reported on the Sony A1 that took its life into its own hands at the Beijing Olympics and launched itself on its own luge track down a snowy mountainside.

It appeared from the footage that the camera would not be in good shape, with plastic pieces flying off it on its way down the slope. I know you’ve probably all been losing sleep awaiting news of the camera’s health so I’m pleased to be able to provide an update.

The Sony A1 reviews hit YouTube and they’re resoundingly positive

YouTubers have had the embargo lifted on the Sony A1 content and now they’re all coming out in force to go over their experiences using the new camera and giving their thoughts on how it stacks up against the competition – including the rest of Sony’s own product lineup.

While there are brief mentions of the A1’s stills features, these reviews largely focus on their video capabilities. After all, when it comes to video, it does everything the video-centric A7S III does, and then some. And it looks like Sony’s managed to solve a lot of the 8K overheating issues suffered by the Canon EOS R5.

Reality check – Comparing the Sony A1 vs A7S III vs A9 II

So, Sony has announced a new camera – something they do with some regularity. But this one’s different. The Sony A1 is their first camera that’s truly worthy of the title “flagship”. It certainly seems to beat both the Canon 1DX Mark III and Nikon D6 in almost every aspect, but how does it compare to Sony’s other higher-end models like the A9 II speed demon and the recently released A7S III?

I wanted to take a somewhat objective look at the three cameras and how they compare on-paper – which is all we can really do for sure right now, as the A1 isn’t going to be out in the wild for at least a couple of months.

Sony finally launches a flagship camera – the 50-megapixel 8K-HDR video Sony A1

Sony has now announced its new flagship mirrorless camera; the Sony A1. The Sony A1 features a brand new 50.1-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor with upgraded BIONZ XR processor offering eight times more processing power than the previous generation. It offers blackout-free shooting at up to a whopping 30 frames per second and it shoots 8K with over 15 stops of dynamic range.

It’s about time that Sony finally released a camera worthy of the “flagship” name. Something that competes on a similar level to the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III and Nikon D6. Of course, with Nikon and Canon’s late entry into the mirrorless market, I suppose Sony wasn’t in much of a rush. Looking at the specs of the new Sony A1, it looks like they’re doing a lot more than competing.
