Speed up your editing on the cheap with these low budget SSDs

The single biggest performance boost that most computers can receive is switching out those slow mechanical hard drives for fast solid state drives. But SSDs are still relatively expensive, for the most part. So when we do upgrade the drives in our computers, it’s often just the one with the operating system and software.

With larger capacity and faster SSDs now starting to become more common, though, lower spec SSD prices are dropping. And there appears to be a super budget line of Adata SSDs on Amazon that’s getting some pretty favourable reviews.

Samsung announces the new X5 super fast 2.8GB/sec external SSD

Portable external SSDs are still in their fairly early days, as far as adoption goes. But that isn’t stopping companies like Samsung from making them bigger and faster already. Samsung’s T3 and T5 SSDs have proven to be quite popular, but the new Samsung X5 SSD really takes it to the extreme offering transfer speeds of up to 2,800MB/sec.

Western Digital launched its first portable SSD drive since merge with SanDisk

Many thought Western Digital were a bit stuck in the times, clinging onto HDD technology. All the others were making the big push towards solid state, especially Seagate, and WD seemed to lag behind. Then, last year, Western Digital completed its acquisition of memory card manufacturer, SanDisk.

Now, Western Digital have unveiled its first portable SSD; The My Passport SSD. It’ll come in three capacities of 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, with a Type C USB3.1 interface. Set to compete directly with the Samsung T3 line of mini portable SSDs, it could see the prices dropping sharply over the next little while.

Samsung Wants To Rid Of Hard Drives, Makes A 256-gigabit Flash

Up until not too long ago having a complete system made with SSDs was not really a practical option for the most photographers. I mean the highest capacity SSD was 2TB and it was a hefty sum of $800, give or take a byte.

But now, Samsung is in the process of manufacturing a huge 256-gigabit SSD (32GB) should enable significantly more storage on each SSD drive. Considering that 80Gigs of data were around $70 just a few years back on 2004, I think that it will not take a lot of time until SSDs will replace HDDs completely. I mean, price per HDD storage dropped from $0.5/Gig to $0.0317/Gig in the course of the last ten years (that is a 96% drop) so it would not be surprising to see these huge SSDs drop from $400/TB to $25/TB in a similar time frame or to $130/TB in the next two years.

Engaget reports that Samsung are upping their yield and planning to ship during 2015. This means that even this year we will see bigger SSD drives at cheaper prices.
