Astrophotographer captures a half-million-mile long solar prominence

An astrophotographer captured a half million-mile-long plasma plume as it shot out from the surface of the sun. The plume is known as a coronal mass ejection and was part of a minor solar storm. The image was created by capturing hundreds of thousands of images over several hours using a specially modified telescope.

The image was captured on September 24 by astrophotographer and Arizona resident Andrew McCarthy. His images are well known for their extraterrestrial beauty and fine attention to detail. But something about this image was different.

Canadian photographer captures incredible aurora photographs created by intense solar storms

A series of particularly intense solar storms have helped create extremely vivid aurora borealis (northern lights) this past week. Astrophotographers across the upper regions of the Northern hemisphere have gone out to capture the incredible phenomena with the lights being visible much further south than is usual due to the greater intensity of the solar storms.

Saskatchewan based Photographer Jenny Hagan took advantage of the situation and created these beautiful images. She describes to DIYP what it was like to witness and photograph such an event.

Whenever I see Andrew McCarthy’s name pop up on my Instagram feed, I know I’ll see and read something amazing. This time, this creative astrophotographer blew my mind with a timelapse of a massive active region of the Sun. It took Andrew solid six hours of observation and shooting this incredible sight, but judging from the end result, it was more than worth it.

NASA Captures Massive Solar Flare; May Amplify Northern Lights

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured photos and video of the first super-powerful solar flare of 2015.

The X-class solar flare was directed at Earth, and while the Earth’s atmosphere protects us from the harmful radiation, it caused a strong radio blackout. More importantly for us photographers, though, such massive radiation bursts may lead to spectacular displays of the Northern Lights.

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
