Silicon Shortage

Fujifilm apologies for shortages of X-T5 cameras

Notices of shortages and delays come from camera and lens manufacturers with alarming regularity these days. This time, it’s Fuji’s turn. Fuji has a history of this that started long before the pandemic. The Fujifilm X-T2 caused the company to be surprised by “overwhelming demand”, and it’s happening again with Fujifilm X-T5 (buy here). It was still quite an uncommon occurrence in 2016, but not so much anymore.

The company isn’t blaming the silicone shortage, supply chain problems or logistics issues. They’re blaming their customers. Those pesky customers just find the Fujifilm X-T5 just too irresistible, and orders “have greatly exceeded our expectations”. The notice affects both black and silver X-T5 body-only (buy here) and the black kit with the 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS lens (buy here).

Canon apologises already for Canon EOS R8 delays

In what might come as completely unexpected and shocking news to some but comes as absolutely no surprise to most of us, Canon has updated its apology announcement. The apology is for delays in the shipping and availability of certain products. It was updated last November to add the then newly announced products, the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R6 Mark II.

Those two cameras are still on the list, but now with the addition of the recently announced Canon EOS R8. The EOS RP (and EOS R) successor was announced only a week ago, but Canon already cannot keep up with the – apparently unexpected – demand.

Canon updates the list of delayed products it can’t supply fast enough to meet demand

Canon, like just about every other manufacturer, is facing camera shortages. Back in March, they announced a list going over those shortages and what we’re going to have to wait for. The bad news is that list still exists and rather than keep posting new announcements each time, they’re just updating the old one. The new list still contains a number of products, and some of those products remain the same, although there are some new ones.

The good news, however, is that Canon doesn’t mention 6-month+ waits in the list, as they did in March and there are far fewer products on it than this time last year. The list has changed to include new items, though, like the EOS R7 and the EOS R6 Mark II, Canon says that they are shipping in order but may take longer to deliver than usual, but the wait, it seems, perhaps won’t be as long as they have been.

Nikon’s high resolution Z8 reportedly “production-ready” but parts shortage delays release until 2023

The hypothetical Nikon Z8 has been rumoured for a long time. Way back in September 2019, we were already seeing leaks and reports about Nikon working on a 60-megapixel camera that was expected to be the Nikon Z8. Many of us expected to have been released by now, but it hasn’t. It seems that Nikon hasn’t been sitting on its laurels, though. Oh no. In fact, the latest word is that the Z8 is “finalized/production-ready”.

It seems that the Nikon Z8 is actually ready to go and the only thing holding it back is the ongoing silicon shortage. It’s still expected to contain a 60-70(ish) megapixel sensor, and is expected to go head-to-head with the recently announced Sony A7R V in terms of target audience. It will be a high-resolution camera targeted towards landscapes, fine art portraits, and other photography where resolution is important.

Sony has resumed production of A6400 APS-C mirrorless camera but A7 II and A6100 likely discontinued

Could the supply chain issues possibly be coming to an end? Well, we’ll have to see about that but for now at least, Sony has announced that they’re able to resume production of 2019’s Sony A6400 APS-C mirrorless camera. Sales of the model were originally suspended in November 2021 due to the ongoing silicone shortage and supply chain issues. Now, though, it appears to be back. At least at the Sony Store, with regular retailers coming soon.

Sony Japan’s statement says that they’re now accepting orders from both distributors as well as customers at the Sony store for the A6400. And while distributors can order, they haven’t yet said when those distributors will receive them and when we’ll be able to order from our favourite local (or online) camera shops again. It also looks like the A7 II and A6100 might not be coming back at all.

Canon reports 6 month delays on delivery of EOS R3 bodies plus more delays EOS R5c and several lenses

Shortages and delays still seem to be the order of the day and Canon Japan has released their latest delayed product list with their usual “apology and guidance” status update. Amongst the products delayed in the latest update are the Canon EOS R3 and EOS R5c bodies, as well as the newly announced RF 800mm 5/6L IS USM and RF 1200mm f/8L USM lenses.

These delays are going to disappoint some potential customers, although they’re not really all that surprising. What is perhaps a little surprising, though, is that orders for the Canon EOS R3 and the RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM, might leave you waiting more than six months according to Canon’s statement.

Nikon Z9 flagship mirrorless camera not expected to ship until October 2022

The global silicon shortage has hit all industries hard, and the camera industry is now feeling it pretty hard. New cameras and lenses have often had delays, historically, but usually not more than a couple of weeks. Then the Pocket 4K came, which had a 3-6 month waiting list for the first 18 months of its release. It was the exception, though, and not the rule. Now with the silicone shortage, it’s the other way around.

And now Japanese camera retail giant Yodobashi says that the Nikon Z9 isn’t going to start shipping out again now until October 2022. Now, we all know Nikon’s struggling generally in the camera market, but this isn’t a problem for just Nikon. Both Canon and Sony have had to massively cut down on production with newly announced items seeing delays of unknown duration.

Sony halts production of 3 popular mirrorless cameras due to the silicon shortage supply chain issues

Sony has announced that they’re halting production of three of their Alpha series mirrorless cameras due to the global silicon shortage. Fortunately, for one of them at least, it’s an older camera model. The Sony A7 II, which has now been superseded twice, since the recent announcement of the Sony A7 IV. The two other models, though, the A6100 and A6400 are still both current models, released in only 2019.

The announcement states that orders for these camera models have now been suspended and they will not be sending any more to distributors or to customers via the Sony store due to the tight supply. So, if you were hoping to pick up one of these models in the Black Friday sales this week, you might be out of luck – unless you can find a retailer that still has a little stock left.

More new Canon products cancelled or delayed due to supply chain issues

Well, this one’s a bit of a mixed bag. Over the weekend, Canon has updated its list of products delayed by supply chain issues and there also appear to be rumours of certain products being cancelled completely, to be reintroduced as a “refreshed” version in the future. It’s not much of a surprise that supply chain issues are still hitting Canon hard as the global silicon shortage is hitting a lot of companies and industries hard.
