Sigma fp and fp L are the first mirrorless cameras to feature EL ZONE metering in major firmware update

Sigma has released new major firmware updates for both the 24-megapixel Sigma fp and 61-megapixel Sigma fp L mirrorless cameras. The new updates add a number of new features to both cameras, including the “Warm Gold” colour mode, support for 4TB SSDs as well as Atomos Cloud Support. They also bring the EL ZONE metering system to both cameras, making them the first mirrorless still/cine cameras to feature it.

The EL ZONE metering system was created by cinematographer Ed Lachman, ASC. It’s a false-colour exposure tool that displays the standard exposure (18% grey) as grey and shows 6 stops of highlights above middle grey, and 6 stops of shadows below middle grey, using a standardised colour-coded format, letting you maximise your camera’s dynamic range and offering more consistency from shot to shot.

Sigma’s new fp L has a 61-megapixel BSI sensor with an AA filter and no IBIS

Well, Sigma has now officially announced their new Sigma fp L mirrorless camera and… Well, it’s a bit meh, really. Sure, it has a shiny new 61-megapixel backside illuminated sensor, but it’s not the rumoured new colour filter array. It’s just a regular Bayer sensor. And like the Sigma fp, there’s still no mechanical shutter and no IBIS.

It does retain the same form factor as the original Sigma fp, though, so fp owners looking to upgrade to the fp L should be able to retain any of their current SmallRig cages and other bits designed for the fp. It’s an odd upgrade, because it seems to be geared towards photographers with the new high res sensor, but lacking features photographers wanted in an fp follow-up.

The Sigma fp L mirrorless camera, expected to be announced at some point later today, is still suffering its share of leaks, right up to the wire. The latest, again from Nokishita, is a price for the new camera, as well as the EVF-11 bolt-on electronic viewfinder.

According to a tweet, the price has been added to overseas retailers lists, and the camera alone will cost you $2,499. Separately, the EVF will be $699, but if you buy the two together, you get a couple of hundred bucks off with a total package price of $2,999.

Leaked photos show new Sigma fp L to come with 60.2-megapixel sensor

According to a report over on L-Rumors, the new Sigma fp L will house a 60.2-megapixel sensor. They show screenshots of a folder of images found on Sigma’s web server, along with EXIF data showing a whopping 9520×6328 pixel resolution.

The sensor that will come in the Sigma fp L is not a Foveon, although it’s not quite a Bayer sensor, either, featuring what is rumoured to be a unique colour filter array layout that’s a bit reminiscent of the Fuji Super CCD sensors from back when they used to make DSLRs.

Sigma fp L images leak ahead of anticipated March 23rd announcement

In what will come as a massive shock to absolutely nobody, Nokishita has managed to get their hands on photos of the upcoming Sigma fp L mirrorless camera ahead of its official announcement expected next week on March 23rd. And in a further act of defiant predictability, they’ve posted them to Twitter.

As well as the Sigma fp L camera itself, they also have photos of the strange-looking modular EVF-11 electronic viewfinder, which bolts onto the side of the camera instead of sitting on top.

The Sigma fp L expected to be announced soon, but with a weird (not Foveon) sensor

The Sigma fp L was thought to have been getting announced at CP+ last month, but it turned out to not be the case. Instead, we just saw the new 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens for Leica L and Sony FE mounts. Now, though, a Tweet from Nokishita suggests that an fp L announcement is imminent. They say that an article with the title “SIGMA fp L First Impressions” has been added to a site that has previously reviewed the 28-70mm mentioned above.

L-Rumors, though, has heard another rumour from a couple of sources suggesting that the Sigma fp L will see a very weird looking sensor. It’s not a Foveon X3 sensor, as it still shows individual photosites for each of the red, green and blue pixels instead of stacking them on top of each other for every pixel. But it looks very much like the old Fuji Super CCD HR sensor from their DSLR days.

Sigma is expected to announce the recently registered Sigma fp L camera at the upcoming CP+ 2021 virtual show in a couple of weeks. Now, though, it looks like they’re set to announce a new 28-70mm f/2.8 FE lens on the same day. According to L-Rumors, Sigma is set to make two announcements at CP+, and chances are, one of them won’t be a full-frame Foveon (yup, I’m still going on about that).

Sigma registers a new “fp L” L mount camera body in Korea

Another one from Nokishita. It appears Sigma has registered a new Sigma fp L camera body in Korea. There’s no real information about it yet except for the fact that it’s been registered, although it appears that we might be able to expect another camera soon from Sigma. Perhaps as soon as the end of this month when CP+ (virtually) begins in Japan later this month.

The Sigma fp, released in 2019, has been fairly well accepted (not adopted, but accepted), given the lack of any real customer base for Sigma outside of its lenses for non-L Mount cameras. It did pretty well in Japan, though – at least on launch. But while it has seen some success, it hasn’t brought people to L mount in droves.
