This software lets you test movie lights without leaving your home

It’s no secret that we use Set a Light to test our photo lighting before we start a shoot. (We talked about it here, here, and extensively here). We even used it to play around with models under lockdown. While I used the software quite a bit for photo projects done with strobes, it lacked in the cinema section. But now, they released a new version, and I am blown away by the possibilities it opened.

How to create a stylized art shoot on a shoestring budget

What do you do when you have to produce a stylized shoot on a shoestring budget? Use colors and paper, of course. I was hired by designer Ofek Bergman to shoot her new clothing collection. Well, hired is not really the term here, as it was more of a pro bono for a starving art student. As usual with this kind of production, almost everyone chipped in and donated their time in exchange for portfolio images, a learning experience, and a great day with great creatives.

With a very limited budget for art, we decided on a pop theme with strong colors and shapes. This would bring the costs down while creating coherency that ties Ofek’s collection together.

The body language of your model has an enormous influence on the visual impact of your photos. We tell you how you can support the expressiveness of your pictures by planned posing and show you with examples what is behind the terms “High Power” & “Low Power” Poses.

As a photographer, you don’t always get a model in front of the lens who is practiced in posing and is also aware of the effect of its poses, for example in customer shootings. A lack of body awareness can sometimes lead to exaggerated poses or insecurity in front of the camera can lead to a tense posture. But this does not have to be the case.

This software lets you shoot full fledged studio photos with multiple models even on lockdown

If you are on the creative side, it’s hard to stay at home without any humans to shoot. If you are not familiar with Set.A.Light 3d, it’s a piece of software that creates realistic studio setups, including pretty realistic models.

So if you are stuck at home, and can’t transform it into a studio, or if you have no one to shoot, this can be a perfect way to feed your creative needs.

This studio simulation is so good, I am recreating my entire portfolio as CGI

Being kind of a computer geek, I found myself looking for a good way to simulate studio lights. I tried Blender, Cinema 4D, and other 3D programs until I found Set.a.Light 3D. Let me save you the long read. It’s awesome. OK, you can continue now.

I first fell in love with Set.aLight 3D with one of its first versions back in 2015 or so. It was love at first light (sorry! I could not resist the pun). Since those early days, the simulation improved quite a bit, and the latest v2 release officially blew my mind.

Sometimes I wonder why I can’t sleep that good. It happens often is a big shoot is on my plan for the next day, I ask myself “Is my light plan right, did I miss something, is there something to improve?”. As a child of the computerized generation, I was wondering if there is a software to simulate light setups. There are different ideas out there on the web, some use Blender to simulate light, others tried Cinema 4D.
