The Sennheiser MKE 400 is an almost perfect on-camera shotgun microphone

As more people have taken to vlogging and creating other content for YouTube over the last few years, on-camera shotgun microphones have become extremely popular. One of the more well-known and long-established names in microphones is Sennheiser, who also make a couple.

They’ve recently released the second iteration of the Sennheiser MKE 400 on-camera shotgun mic and it sees a massive change in both appearance and quality over its predecessor. It’s designed for use with both smartphones as well as “real” cameras and includes some great features for both types of user. I’ve been using one for a few weeks now, so here are some of my thoughts.

Sennheiser’s 2nd Gen MKE 400 comes with auto-power, headphone monitoring and Type-C digital output

Sennheiser has launched the second generation of its MKE 400 on-camera microphone, bringing with it some significant improvements over its predecessor and a stylish new design that looks a lot more like last year’s MKE 200 than the previous model MKE 400. Those features bring it in line with some of the models we’ve seen from the competition recently.

The two stand-out features for me are auto-power that turns the microphone on and off when it detects that you’ve turned the camera on and off as well as the Type-C USB audio connection, turning it into a digital audio device when plugged into a smartphone, bypassing low-quality preamps. It also has more gain settings, headphone monitoring and more.

Today we are comparing over $1,700 worth of shotgun mics: Rode VideoMic NTG vs. Rode VideoMic Pro+ vs. Sennheiser MKE 400 vs. Sennheiser MKH 416.

The Rode Videomic NTG is the new top of the line mic form RODE, and it packs quite a few interesting features. It’s part of the VideoMic series which is usually for on-camera use, but it’s also an NTG which is usually used for the company’s high-end mics. We tested the microphone, and we can see why it’s both an NTG and a VideoMic. For our thoughts on the features and on the sound quality, hit the jump.
