Will Sutton, well known for his wicked parkour skills, is quite possibly the only person capable of making selfie sticks cool.

Using a GoPro and a selfie stick, the London-based professional free runner, created this action-filled point-of-view “selfie” video while showing off what he can do.

Have a seat before watching this; Sutton’s incredible talent could make you dizzy.

Tourists all over the world are especially susceptible to robbery, but while a selfie stick with an expensive phone attached to it might make them stick out like a sore thumb, it could now be used to protect them.

A Moscow-based martial arts school started offering self-defense classes combining traditional fighting methods with selfie sticks.

The new “art” is called ‘MPD fight’ (monopod fight) and apparently it’s already a global trend.

How To Confuse Tourists With A Camera Made Out Of A Coconut (Hint: Put It On A Selfie Stick)

Kotama Bouabane, a photographer and artist in residence at the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada, had the idea to make a camera out of a coconut shell to see what kind of photos he couldget. To do so, Bouabane poked a hole through one of the coconut’s “eyes”, cut it in half, then drained and removed the coconut meat. To expose a photo, he simply slides a piece of photographic paper between the two halves and opens the “eye” hole to let in light. (Bouabane even saves the coconut water to put into his chemical baths when he’s developing the images.)[Read More…]

You know that ever since places stated to ban selfie sticks we are left with very little options on location for a selfie. You are almost confined to taking selfies solely at home. Luckily this new selfie spoon stick (which is partially a publicity stunt from cinnamon toast crunch) will let you take a selfie while you are eating your cereal.

The Selfie Spoon looks like a hybrid between a selfie stick and, well… a spoon. It comes in hideous purple only and features a remote that can snap a photo at the precise time you are eating your cereal. What else can you ask for?

Ammunition, explosives, firearms and selfie sticks will be banned at Papal events in Washington. That’s right, the Secret Service is in charge of securing one of the most high-profile people in the world and it’s the elongated selfie accessory that is keeping them up at night.

Being designated as a National Special Security Event by the Department of Homeland Security, visitors to events and activities planned for Pope Francis’ visit to the capital will have to comply with a lengthy list of security and transportation restrictions, including a ban on the beloved and behated selfie stick.

So, how long before jokes begin about how selfie sticks were created by the devil and anyone using them will go to hell?

New Website Tells You If You Can Bring Your Selfie Stick

Some days, the Internet makes being nice a challenging prospect, but we’ll give it a try here.  Selfies, many of which will be burned into our memories for a very long time, are a permanent part of modern culture.  I was rather humored (and simultaneously disturbed) to see selfie sticks being sold in the toy section of Walmart yesterday.  Targeting consumers when they’re young, I guess, is a way to ensure long-term profitability.

However, not every great destination permits devices such as selfie sticks to be used while visiting.  If you’re a self stick-toter, a new website may be your best friend.  The site canibringmyselfiestick.com takes inventory of numerous landmarks around the world and gives you a simple answer as to whether or not you are allowed to bring the accessory.

Selfiology: the Story of the Selfie

More than once I have succumbed to the pressure to be in one and together with me, only few have been able to escape the phenomenon of the selfie.

Selfies seem to have become just another part of life. Over time the wonderment about people striking the strangest of poses in front of their telephones has vanished. Younger generations will even find themselves in selfies that exceed their memory. We have simply learned to see upon the selfie as a part of modern day society and the debate surrounding it slowly fades away.

Many photographers don’t appreciate the fact that wedding guests use their camera and smartphone to take photos during a wedding. This is mostly because those many times interfere with the work of the photographer.

The post below surfaced on facebook and was massively shared gaining around 4,000 shares and 5,500 likes in the course of three days:

First New York, Now Paris? Selfie Sticks Are Under Attack

Following in the footsteps of US museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim, Hirshhorn Museum, and the Getty Center, Museums in Paris are considering the ban of selfie sticks.

The Palace of Versailles seems to be spearheading the ban with its guards already ordering visitors to keep their selfie sticks packed away, and the ban is expected to become formal “within weeks”.

The Pompidou Centre which houses the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Europe’s largest modern art museum, is “heading towards a ban” as well.

The Louvre is said to be concerned, while the Musee d’Orsay has nothing to worry about.

Planning A Trip To The Museum? Not With That Selfie Stick You’re Not

When it comes to selfie sticks, there seem to be two kinds of people: those who love them and those who despise them. Maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but seeing as how you’re here on a photography website, I’m willing put my money on you not being too fond of them. And, if I’m right, then we’re both in luck. Museums across the United States are beginning to enforce a selfie stick ban that prohibits visitors from using the obnoxious arm extenders within the museum’s walls.

As much as I’m convinced museums want to admit they’re enforcing the ban to “respect artistry” (thanks Kanye) and the actual artists whose work is being exhibited, most museums are taking the politically correct route and citing the inherent safety concerns of carefree tourists recklessly parading around priceless art exhibits with an 3-foot long stick protruding from their persons. Fair enough, I suppose, but it doesn’t make it any less painful to report that many museums and galleries actually promote the taking of selfies (sans selfie stick, of course), especially if you’re a celebrity like Katy Perry or Beyonce and Jay-Z.[Read More…]
