Selfie Drone

The AirSelfie2 drone comes with a higher resolution camera and more storage

The original AirSelfie, released in 2016, was a pretty interesting idea. A phone-sized drone for shooting selfies. But it didn’t seem to really take off (no pun intended) due to a few limitations. The camera is low resolution at only 5MP and the battery life meant you only got a few minutes of flight time.

With the release of the AirSelfie2, that flight time has now doubled (so you get 5 minutes instead of 2 or 3) and the camera’s seen a resolution increase to 12MP. The larger photos also mean that the internal storage gets a bit of a bump, too, going from 4GB to 16GB.

The PITTA is a 4K camera that transformes into a drone, action or security camera

This looks like a pretty interesting little camera, although I have to say, given its shape, I’m a little disappointed it’s not 360°. It’s being funded through Kickstarter, and has already smashed way past its $50,000 goal, currently sitting at almost $300K with 29 days still to go.

The PITTA is spherical in design but comes apart into two pieces to attach “modules”. The action camera module contains 1/4-20″ socket for mounting to tripods, selfie sticks and gimbals. The drone module contains four propellers to send it up into the air.  The charging cradle acts as the third module allowing to use it as a security camera in your home.

This drone-mounted large format camera made the world’s first aerial tintype photograph

Combining levels of technology from vastly different times is often very fascinating. Sometimes it’s amusing, and occasionally it fails miserable. This time, failure is definitely not the word that springs to mind. For this particular merging of devices, photographer Giles Clement mounted a large format camera to a drone.

Why? To create the world’s first aerial tintype photographs, of course. Not content with simply making a photograph from the air, though, Giles and the team also produced the world’s first drone tintype selfie. Well, if one really wants to bring tintypes into the modern age, then I suppose one has to, really. It does look pretty awesome, though.

Yuneec’s Breeze 4K drone is a small selfie drone in the world of giants

With both GoPro and DJI announcing their new small flagships (can you say small flagship?), Yuneec’s new drone announcements kinda went under the radar.

Rather than making a full fledged, full capacity drone, Yuneec madea small “selfie” drone – The Breeze 4k – that is limited in features, but has a low price tag.

The new ROAM-e $400 selfie-drone has a rather unfortunate design

The idea of a selfie drone isn’t all that unique any more.  Many drones come with a “follow” mode for just this sort of thing, and it’s the Hover Camera’s sole purpose in life.  The new ROAM-e, though, does have something of a unique appearance.

Described by The Verge as the “flying phallus” (I think that name might stick), the suggestive design is no doubt quite practical.  Spheres and cylinders allow side winds to blow past quite easily, and with a lower centre of gravity it should keep close to level quite well.
