It keeps fascinating me how much we don’t know about the underwater world and how many remarkable species are still being discovered. One of them is a new species of jellyfish that MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) recently discovered.

Found in the depths of Monterey Bay, California, the team scientifically described the new species of crown jellyfish. But they also caught it on camera so all of us can enjoy seeing it (and perhaps be slightly terrified by it).

The timelapse journeys of Jeffrey Tsang have fascinated me for a while. If you recognise the name, it might be because you’re already subscribed to him on YouTube, but long time readers may remember that we’ve featured Jeffrey here on DIYP before.

After a bit of an extended 18-month break from posting content, he’s come back this week with an update video on his shipping career since getting his captain’s license and what it means for the future of his channel, but he’s also dropped a very interesting 8K timelapse showing the entire route through the Panama canal.

An ocean expedition exploring the depths of the Atlantic Ocean captured a video that looks like a cartoon turned real life. The cartoon is SpongeBob SquarePants, to be exact. The video shows a square yellow sponge and a pink starfish right next to it. Familiar, isn’t it?

If you ask me, animals who steal cameras are always fun to watch. We’ve seen some hilarious encounters of mammals and birds with GoPros, and the funny video we’re about to share with you today took place in the sea. It shows a curious little octopus persistently trying to steal a diver’s GoPro. And it looks like the animal liked it a lot!

Do you remember that awesome timelapse from a couple of years ago of 30 days at sea compressed down into 10 minutes by Jeff Tsang? Well, he’s going to give it another go. Only this time, he’s building a massive 24K resolution 360° waterproof camera rig in order to shoot it.

In this video, he breaks down all the gear he’s using to build the giant 360° camera rig, along with how and why it’s all been chosen. It’s a pretty mammoth project, especially considering he says it probably won’t earn back the purchase price, but boy is it impressive!

Photographer Benjamin Von Wong is known for his ambitious projects which often point to serious environmental issues we’re faced with. In his latest project named Strawpocalypse, his models “parted the sea” made of 168,000 used plastic straws. It took a lot of time and effort to build the installation. But it paid off: Ben took some fantastic images which send a message that we can do something to decrease pollution of the sea with plastic.

A few days ago, a group of children was cleaning up the beach in Taiwan when they found an unusual “rock” covered in barnacles and shells. Upon a closer look, the kids and their teacher Park Lee realized that they’d actually found a camera – and it was still working inside its underwater case. They decided to try and track down the owner, so they posted some photos on Facebook. After only one day they found a girl who had lost this camera more than two years ago!

E/V Nautilus is an exploration vessel exploring unknown regions of the ocean. And just in time for the New Year celebration, the deep sea treated them with quite unusual fireworks. Their camera filmed a rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish at 4,000 feet depth. Its vibrant colors glow when it’s lit, and the gorgeous creature threw an amazing show for the crew and the viewers.

Jeffrey Tsang is a maritime YouTube vlogger, sailor, and photographer. He sails on a container ship that travels across the globe, and in his latest timelapse he shows you a wonderful journey across the sea. He put 30 days of sailing into only 10 minutes. And these are probably the most awe-inspiring 10 minutes on YouTube. His timelapse shows plenty of beautiful sights, from thunderstorms on the open sea, to moonlit night skies.

He took photos over the course of 30 days and ended up with about 80,000 images to combine into a timelapse movie. His journey started from the Red Sea and ended in Hong Kong.
