Shoot for better composites by choosing your background first

As an artist who shoots mostly composites, more often than not I’m going to be cutting out my subject and placing them in a different scene. A lot of the time I only have a rough idea of what kind of a background I’ll be using, so I just shoot my subject as best as I can and figure out the backdrop later. Sometimes I have no idea what I’m going to do with my model, but a wise and incredibly good-looking man once said, “You don’t always need a plan.”

HOWEVER, if I do a shoot knowing full well what my background looks like before I even pick up my camera, it makes everything a million times easier.

How I created Blade Runner inspired image in Photoshop

Recently I was thinking about the year so far and noticed that my output for the year was down compared to other years. Why was this? Maybe I have been too busy with other aspects of the business etc. Sometimes it can be hard to get and shoot when the business issues have to be dealt with. Even so, I still want to keep my Photoshop skills sharp and some kind of regular image rate. So my decision is to start using stock more. I prefer to shoot my own images, but using stock frees me up to create images I may not have been able to if I was shooting everything myself. A lot of people love Star Wars.  Granted, I’m not one of them, but I’m beginning to learn that my opinion doesn’t necessarily impact the choices of the rest of the world.  (Someday this will change…)  Daniel Grove is one of those who loves Star Wars.  Paying homage to his beloved science fiction genre, the Texas-based photographer teamed up with couple Angel and Kyson to create an engagement shoot of epic proportions.

In a galaxy not-so-far-far away, they brought the fight of the Galactic Empire to the Texan countryside.  With full Tatooine-esque (Tatooinian-esque?  Tatooineü-esque?) wardrobe and makeup, the couple fought for their mortal survival against Sith Lords to eventually win the day.  (I love how it looks like Kyson is “slip-thumbing” his laser gun…)
