SanDisk adds 512GB and 1TB capacities to its UHS-II V60 SD Card lineup

SanDisk has expanded the capacities of its Extreme Pro UHS-II V60 SD card lineup. The two new cards are the SanDisk 512GB Extreme Pro UHS-II V60 SDXC (buy here) and the SanDisk 1TB Extreme Pro UHS-II V60 SDXC (buy here). The cards offer maximum read speeds of 280MB/sec and maximum write speeds of 150MB/sec.

Like the rest of the SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II lineup, the two new cards are V60 spec. This means they guarantee a minimum sustained write speed of 60MB/sec. So you can shoot footage of up to 480Mbps without worrying about “slow card” warnings from your camera.

SanDisk’s 1TB microSD cards are ridiculous and every photographer should get one

When I first heard the announcement that SanDisk was showing off a 1TB SD card at Photokina 2016, I thought “Impressive, but why?” Ok, at first I thought “That’s insane!!!”, who’s going to use a card that big? Then I was impressed. When they announced a 1TB Extreme microSD card at the beginning of this year, though, my thought changed to “Cool, want one!”. The difference, for me, is the form factor.

Since then, SanDisk has also released a faster Extreme Pro 1TB microSD card. And now I have one. Here, I’m going to tell you how I’m using it, what I think of it and why I think every photographer needs one.

It might be a little bit early to start thinking about stocking stuffers for the photographer in your life, or perhaps to even treat yourself. But while everybody’s in a buying mood, it’s worth thinking about doing now so you’re not driving around on Christmas Eve looking for somewhere open that still has something worth getting.

So, here are some of the low budget items that we use all the time for our photography, either for DIYP coverage or for our personal work. It is by no means an exhaustive list of the inexpensive products we use, but these have been the most valuable to us. So, get them for yourself while you’re in a buying mood, or start buying your photographer friends their little Christmas gifts now!

SanDisk has finally released their 1TB Extreme Pro SD Cards

It’s been three long years since SanDisk first showed off a 1TB SD card at Photokina. It was operational, but it was essentially just a proof of concept to show that it could be done. Now, SanDisk feels the market is ready to adopt such huge cards, and that the prices today will be more manageable than they were in 2016.

We caught up with SanDisk at IBC 2019 where they were also showing off the 1TB microSD Cards, their new CFexpress cards, as well as a new fast USB SSD.

SanDisk enters the CFexpress market with new SanDisk Extreme Pro cards

CFexpress is the drop-in next-generation replacement for XQD. It’s also a sort-of replacement for CFast. It doesn’t fit into a CFast slot, but it’s what manufacturers are dumping in favour of CFexpress in their new generations of kit – like Canon’s recently announced EOS C500 Mark II. So far, we’ve seen a few companies throw their names into the hat, but one notable player has remained pretty silent. Until now.

SanDisk has announced their new SanDisk Extreme Pro CFexpress 2.0 Type B card, which is already available for sale in European markets. It’s popped up in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities in the UK and other places, and writes up to 1.4GB/sec and reads at up to 1.7GB/sec.

Finding a $500 camera setup that can deliver stunning portraits as well as a wide range of other types of photography was a challenge, to say the least! First and foremost I had to put together some bare minimum requirements/standards:

Recently, a user on Sony Alpha subreddit reported an issue with his a7 III when a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card is inserted. They were looking for an advice from fellow Sony users, but as it turned out – many more of them have had the same issue with the same memory card type.

How to fix the Sony A6300 overheating issue

For a long while now, we’ve been using the Sony a6300 as a second camera/frugal 4k camera. The quality is superb and really, we could not be happier. Well, that’s a lie, we could be happier if the darn thing did not overheat after 15 minutes of use. OK, skipping to another story: Over the last few weeks, we’ve moved from our old fleet of Sandisk Extreme Pro cards to Prograde V60 cards.

We noticed that after the move to the UHS-II cards, the a6300 is no longer overheating. At least in out controlled studio environment. For testing, we turned the AC off (as you can probably tell) and plugged the a6300 into a Tethered Tools case relay to get uninterrupted power. The SanDisk Extreme pro lasted about 15 minutes, while the Prograde lasted the entire 30 minutes.

Now, here is the interesting thing, the Prograde V60 are USH-II cards. (you’ll see that the cards have more contacts). Once we moved to those cards, the camera stopped overheating and we can reach the “imposed” 30 minutes recording that the camera provides, effectively doubling the recording time we get from it.
