Reporter robbed of camera at gunpoint while filming a piece about robberies

It’s the kind of cruel irony you see in a scene from a movie or a TV show or something. Don Ford, a reporter for KPIX 5 News was shooting a story on the rise of robberies in San Francisco’s Twin Peaks neighbourhood since certain roads were closed off due to the pandemic. These roads had previously led to tourist attractions, but with local thieves’ main targets no longer visiting that area, they’ve restored to robbing the people that live there instead.

Ford was interviewing nearby homeowners about the robbers when a “white luxury sedan” vehicle pulled up outside one of the homes, three men stepped out, with a fourth remaining in the vehicle, and robbed Ford at gunpoint, proclaiming “we’re taking the camera”.

2020 is… well, it’s 2020. There’s never been a year in this planet’s history that we can compare it to. But, it’s pretty nuts. Right now, much of California and other western US states are suffering from some major wildfires which have so far killed at least 23, destroyed hundreds of homes and caused over 500,000 people to evacuate.

The fires seem more intense than in previous years and has actually caused some cities, like San Francisco to resemble scenes from the movie Blade Runner 2049, as the drone footage above from YouTuber DoctorSbaitso shows. If you watch the Blade Runner 2049 trailer from 58 seconds in, you’ll see exactly what people are talking about.

Photography is not a crime. Sucker punching a man and beating him while on the ground is. This lesson was learned by three individuals in San Francisco recently after attacking photographer Peter Muller. Muller had taken a couple of photos of an accident that had occurred to send to a friend over Snapchat who was out of town.

Muller says the accident was due to a taxi driver falling asleep at the wheel. He drove into the sidewalk, “obliterated the news stand”, continued into a shoeshine shop, critically injuring two people. Muller had been photographing the aftermath of accident when the trio confronted him.

In November 2013, filmmaker Matthew Maniego presented us with a great timelapse of San Francisco called Paradise x SF. Since that time, he’s been working on a sequel. It’s finally here, and some of the scenes are just breathtaking.

Paradise x SF 2 has a very different feel to its predecessor. The music is calmer, the scenes more relaxed, and this time it’s been rendered in 4K for some stunning detail. Matthew spoke with DIYP and gave us some information on how it came together.

Clever Parody Mocks Apple’s Brag Campaign By Displaying Photos Also Shot On iPhone 6

Those Apple advertisements featuring gorgeous photos and a simple line of text which shares the photographer’s name along with “Shot on iPhone 6” are starting to pop up everywhere, subtly leading people to believe all they really need to start taking better cell phone shots is an iPhone upgrade. After Apple plastered the ads all over San Franscisco, two local graphic designers decided to instill a little more truth into the viral ad campaign.

They scoured the internet for photos which were also taken on an iPhone 6 that are, perhaps, more typical of shots people usually take with their iPhones. You know, like naked bathroom selfies. The two used the photos they found to make their own set of “Shot On iPhone 6” posters and took to the streets to hang their masterpieces up alongside authentic Apple ads for a cheeky little side by side comparison. They named the parody Also Shot On iPhone 6, gave it’s own Tumblr, and watched as the city of San Francisco scrambled to take their ingenious posters down.[Read More…]

Outside of pushing resolution to all new heights, a lot of the techniques being used in timelapse photography at the moment are somewhat stale. That’s why it’s always refreshing to see a departure from the norm surface in the vast pool of timelapse videos. Toby Harriman’s Gotham City SF is just that. We’re used to seeing cityscapes and San Francisco, the beautiful town it is, is a frequent muse to photographers. Harriman, however, spent well over a year looking at the city in monochrome from all different perspectives.

And if all that fancy camera work isn’t enough for you, it’s paired with an incredible soundtrack that was composed by a very gifted 14 year old composer by the name of James Everingham. [Read More…]
