Samsung rumored to be dropping out of the camera business

This next rumor is to be taken with a chunk of salt, but it’s a huge one if true.

Samsung’s cameras haven’t exactly taken over the camera market, and it’s said that management has decided to pull the plug on its digital camera business.

The South Korean company has not issued a statement regarding the matter as of this time, but Korean journal “Newstomato” reports that a decision to stop all development was made back in July already.

Without an official response one way or another, forums are filling up with “proof” that the electronic giant will or won’t shut down its camera division.

4k UltraHD Video Camera Showdown: a7S, GH4 and NX1 Compared

We recently did a quick poll here on the blog and if our audience is any indication shooting 4K video is not there yet. But early adopters (manufacturer and shooters alike) are starting to use 4K capable cameras and it is time to start comparing some of the consumer/prosumer models out there.

In this showdown Tony Northrup compares three models: Panasonic’s GH4, Samsung’s NX1 and Sony’s a7S connected to an Atomos Shogun (to draw full 4K out). The team compared Dynamic range, focus tracking, high iso, impact on computer performance and more. (As a side note, price for 4K is quite difference as well: $1,500 for the GH4, $1,300 for the NX1 and $4,500 for the a7S and shotgun combined)

Samsung Introduces The NX500 – A NX1 In A Smaller Body

Receiving many of its features from Samsung’s flagship NX1, the NX500 packs a serious punch.

The 28MP BSI APS-C sensor, 4K video recording @24p and 1080@60p, max ISO of 51,200, built in Wi-Fi, hybrid NX AF system III and the user interface are just some of the similarities between the two cameras.

If you need USB 3.0, 4K output over HDMI or 15 fps (instead of 9), however, you will still need to get the NX1.
