How far has “Portrait Mode” come and can it compete with a Hasselblad X1D?

When “Portrait Mode” was first introduced with the iPhone 7+ it was met with mixed reaction. Some people loved it, thought it was a fantastic feat of software engineering. Others hated it, either they felt threatened by it (yes, really) or just didn’t think it looked believable enough. Neither side is particularly wrong, though.

It is a fantastic feat of software engineering. But it wasn’t perfect in the beginning. It still isn’t, but it’s improved a whole lot in the last year and a bit. Other manufacturers have also developed things further. So, how do they stack up today against a large sensor camera like the Hasselblad X1D? That’s what Marques Brownlee attempts to determine in this video.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8’s camera ties iPhone 8 Plus, DxO Mark says

The iPhone 8 Plus camera recently took the first place on DxO Mark’s list. But, now they’ve tested Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and confirmed that iPhone has a serious competitor when it comes to smartphone cameras.

The Note 8 is Samsung’s dual camera phone, and as DxO writes, it offers the best zoom capabilities of any mobile device they’ve tested so far. It has won an overall score of 94, which ties it to the iPhone 8 Plus in terms of the camera performance. However, the only reason the results are tied is that the iPhone performs better for the video. As for photography, Samsung’s new smartphone has scored the maximum 100.

iPhone 8 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8: hands-on camera comparison

According to the DxO tests, the camera of the iPhone 8 Plus is the best they’ve tested so far. It scored the impressive result of 94, but could Samsung Galaxy Note 8beat it? DxO hasn’t tested this phone’s camera yet, but SuperSafTV’s Safwan Ahmedmia has.

In this video, you can see a side-by-side comparison of iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8. He tests the quality of the video, audio and photos, in terms of sharpness, low-light performance, dynamic range, background blur and so on. It’s a pretty detailed test and gives you a really good insight into the performance of both cameras. And if you’re thinking of getting the latest iPhone, this comparison might make you think twice.

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
