These are the most popular new photo and video gear rentals of 2021

It’s always interesting to see what products people are renting for their productions. Probably more so than the gear people are actually buying. Many filmmakers and photographers buy stuff because they want it, not necessarily because they need it. But to justify the cost of a rental, the gear typically has to offer features you do actually need and can justify spending the cash on (because you typically have to justify it to a client, too).

LensRentals just posted the stats for their rentals of gear released in 2021. What’s the most popular? This list of their 18 most popular rentals covers every product type, not just one category like cameras or lenses. It’s kind of a who’s who of fairly high-end gear released in 2021, but there are one or two surprises in the list that placed a little higher or lower than I expected.

Thieves target Atlanta film industry businesses stealing over $3,000,000 in gear

It seems that Atlanta is the big movie business target for thieves at the moment, with a number of companies banding together to try to combat the problem. Surveillance cameras of a recent breaking at video production services and gear rental company, PC&E in Atlanta where thieves managed to get in, steal over $100,000 worth of equipment and get back out again in less than 10 minutes, with one camera alone reported to be worth around $90,000.

According to a report from CBS46 in Atlanta, the thieves broke in through a window and “just started grabbing stuff” as can be seen on the CCTV recording. There are said to have been over 30 break-ins since the summer, resulting in losses of more than $3,000,000 in gear value alone – not to mention the cost of repairs to facilities, lost business due to not having the gear to rent, etc.

Canon hammered every other brand for gear rentals in 2020

Although the overall number of photography and video productions has been cut short this year, there have still been many going ahead. Many photographers and filmmakers have taken to working from home, shooting products while other productions have been able to ahead with appropriate safety measures in place. That some shoots have been able to still go ahead, though, means that gear rental is still doing quite well.

LensRentals has posted their annual lists of the most popular rental gear for 2020, and it’s an overwhelming Canon majority in just about every list.  They say they’ve still been able to rent out thousands of items each month for those ongoing productions, and it’s given them a decent sample size to pool data.

These are Lensrentals’ most popular gear rentals for 2019

Each year, gear rental company Lensrentals likes to pool their data and see which was the most popular kit of the year. It’s quite an interesting list, showing some of the trends of the previous 12 months or so. They’ve just posted this year’s list, which covers from January 1st until December 12th, 2019, and there are one or two surprising products in there.
