If nobody cared, would you still take pictures?
I’ve been posing this question to myself for a while now, this idea of “If nobody cared about my work, would I still create?”. Am I creating truly for myself, or is it a hybrid between the audience’s and my own enjoyment combined?
It stems back to this idea of value. More specifically self value. Whether it comes from respect, love, friendship, art etc.
Yeah, I know, quit with the “X reasons to shoot Y” already, but here’s the thing, people are still interested in this stuff, and none of these types of posts are really trying to make you give up what you’re doing and completely rethink your photography life choices.
They’re simply to give you more information, so that you can make more informed choices about what you want to do. I shoot film and digital, as does Mattias Burling who presents his 5 reasons to shoot film in this four and a half minute video. If you’re curious about shooting film, then watch it. If you’re not, then don’t.
I started photography about 6 years ago. I was doing a 365 day project in flickr when I saw all the great strobist shots people were taking. I wanted to give it a try but I only had one sb-24 speedlight (it’s a 1988 flash) and no light modifiers whatsoever so I needed to DIY my own lights.
I remember the first DIY project that I made, it was a 1 foot x 1 foot softbox made out of illustration board and tracing paper. After that I used a silver umbrella and a white shower curtain to create my own studio look and after that was history in the making.

There was an article recently here in DIYP about 5 reasons why you should own at least one prime lens, I strongly agree to this. I normally tell the new photographers that the next lens they should buy is a prime lens. Here is the thing though, after buying a prime lens make sure not to sell your kit lens too fast. Here are my 6 reasons why you should keep your kit lens. I am a Nikon shooter, so expect Nikon examples, but everything here is true for Canon too).
