Atomos has announced that they are working with Panasonic to co-develop Raw over HDMI for the recently announced Panasonic S1H mirrorless camera. Naturally, the device they plan to record to is the Atomos Ninja V 4K HDR monitor/recorder. Atomos says that this will be a free update for the Ninja V when released by Panasonic.
Nikon’s long-awaited firmware update for the Z6 and Z7 to add 4K ProRes raw video capability via an external recorder still isn’t here. We still don’t know when it’s going to be coming beyond “later this year”, although we do now know that this will not be a free firmware update. It will be a paid upgrade. That’s going to upset some people.
You can still shoot 10-bit N-Log video externally already without raw capabilities, although N-Log hasn’t exactly been the easiest to grade. Nikon has now, however, released two completely free LUT files for both the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 cameras.
Apple’s ProRes has been a staple codec for video editors for years. But as RAW is being adopted by more cameras, people are starting to stray from ProRes. Apple’s response has been to release a new ProRes RAW format. But so far, nobody’s really been able to see how it is to work with or what it’s capable of.
But now, thanks to the Panasonic EVA1 and Atomos Shogun Inferno, and Filmmaker David J. Fernandes, we get some insight. Fernandes shot a short film, Binge, entirely using that setup with ProRes RAW and it appears to be the first one out there. Here’s the trailer for that film.

With NAB often comes new announcements from DJI. This year, there are two big ones for serious filmmakers. There’s the DJI Force Pro, offering full remote control and manoeuvrability over the Ronin 2, Ronin-S and other gimbals. Also announced today are the new DJI Master Wheels also offering remote gimbal control with high precision in a more traditional style cinema tool.
DJI have also confirmed that not only is there a new Apple ProRes RAW codec on the way, but that they’ll be the first to implement it, too. Coming to the DJI Zenmuse X7 camera, announced last October, ProRes RAW seems to be Apple’s new standard for RAW video adding to the current mix of RED, ARRI and CinemaDNG options. Of course, ProRes has a long lineage as an industry standard, so it may win out in the long term.
