How to make a simple $10 DIY disco prism for Profoto A1

Controlling and modifying light is a lot of what photography with studio lights and battery powered strobes are about. Especially when it comes to portraits, I like to work with my lighting setups so they add something that is not perfect or flat.

Twisting and turning your lights to make use of the edges is one very effective way of doing that. Breaking up the light with a scrim, gobo or something else is also very rewarding.

This DIY project is all about a cheap prism from a LED Disco Party Bulb that I found for under 10 EUR/USD.

“Reverse Prisma” AI turns paintings into photos and turns winter to summer

Ok, imaging AI is just getting ridiculous now. By now we all know of the Prisma app. It lets you take photos and turn them into images that resemble paintings by artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, etc. A team of reseachers at UC Berkley have come up with a system that does the exact opposite of that. It looks at paintings and turns them into something that resembles a photograph.

Using the same principles, though, the team have also taken things in an entirely different direction, allowing you to map individual objects between each other. Such as turning horses into zebras, or vice versa. And now, we really can compare apples to oranges.

Prisma begins rolling out video processing feature

Prisma still seems to be gaining popularity and shows no signs of slowing down just yet. One feature that users have been begging for since its initial launch is the ability to add effects to video. Sure, a few people have managed to get around this missing feature with timelapse, processing stills one at a time. But it’s a painstaking process.

Now, Prisma have started rolling out video processing directly into the app. At the moment, the feature is only available for iOS (sorry Android users), and it doesn’t appear to be available in all regions (it’s showing up for the US App Store, but not UK App Store). There is a time limit on the videos, which is 15 seconds. This isn’t an eternity, and may cause problems for some, but it’s a start.

This band made an entire music video using the Prisma app

Video capability just can’t come to Prisma fast enough for some people. For band Drive like Maria, it certainly can’t. For their new video, Deep Blue, every frame was processed using the mobile app.

Using a mobile app to process a video is not uncommon. When the app you’re using only works one still shot at a time, though, it’s a tedious process. It’s also a long process. The result seems worth the effort, though, at least in this case.

Android users rejoice. Prisma for Android is now available

Yup, that’s right, after a super brief beta period of only a few days, Prisma is now available for Android. The wildly popular iOS app has over 10.6 million downloads since its launch a short time ago.

Prisma shows no signs of slowing down with over 1.55 million daily active users and over 400 million photos “prismed”. Opening up the software to Android adds a huge chunk to their potential userbase.

This timelapse short film of China uses Prisma app to look like a painted animation

Launched for iOS around five weeks ago, Prisma seems to have taken the world by storm. At least, it has if the images scrolling through my Facebook feed have been anything to go by.

According to their website “Prisma transforms your photos into artworks using the styles of famous artists”. District 7 Media have taken it to the extreme by re-shooting timelapse of China using the Prisma app.
