Core SWX’s new Powerbase Edge Link can power your mirrorless camera for over 12 hours

Core SWX has updated its Powerbase lineup, initially launched in 2019, with two new batteries. There’s the PB Edge Link, a 70Wh V-mount battery that sports a 7.4v output port for your DSLR or mirrorless camera, as well as Type-A 5v and Type-C Power Delivery USB ports and two 14.8v d-tap ports. According to Core SWX, this battery is capable of powering a Sony A7 series camera for over 12 hours.

The other is the new PB Edge Lite, a 47Wh battery that is primarily designed to live underneath your camera and provides a little over 8 hours of use on a Sony A7 series camera. Like the PB Edge Link, there are two 14.8v d-tap sockets, a 7.4v port for your camera, but no USB-PD. Instead, you get a pair of Type-C USB sockets capable of delivering 5v. It’s very similar to the original PB Edge Base, but without V-mount connectivity.

This 27,000,000mAh “portable” power bank can charge your camera battery thousands of times

Power is always an issue for photographers and filmmakers when you’re away from plug sockets for extended periods of time. And I’m a big fan of portable power for my gear and to recharge stuff. But this one really takes the cake. It’s billed as “portable” power bank, but it doesn’t exactly fit in your pocket… Or even a camera bag. An entire camera bag. Without any camera gear in it. But this thing has huge a storage capacity to match its huge size.

It was built by Chinese tinkerer Handy Geng, who decided to go a little over the top after seeing that his friend’s USB power banks were bigger than his. So, he set about making his own DIY 27,000,000mAh power bank. Yes, you read that right, a 27 million mAh – or 27,000Ah or 27kAh – “portable” power bank. Potentially enough to charge a camera battery thousands of times over!

The Omnicharge Off-Grid Power Station is a powerful 1500W plug socket in the wild

Portable power has become a big deal over the last few years as more photographers and filmmakers are discovering the joy of getting out of the studio and shooting on location. And thanks to new battery tech, gone are the days of noisy generators (for some of us anyway).

This one from Omnicharge, though, definitely ranks up there amongst the beefiest I’ve seen, though. It’s the Omni Off-Grid Power Station and it’s an absolute monster, capable of delivering up to 1500 Watts of continuous power. As with previous Omnicharge products, like the “Ultimate” (review here), the new Off-Grid Power Station is being funded through IndieGoGo.

The Chargetech 124K is a beast of a power station with a 124,000mAh battery

Is that a power bank in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? That was my first thought when I was introduced to this beast delivering over 462Wh of power. That’s right, 124,800mAh at 3.7V.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love power. I always have a Xiaomi 20,000mAh in my backpack and I’ll take an Omni 20 or Ultimate out for production, but this… this is far beyond any photographer’s wildest dreams.

The Core SWX Powerbase Edge wants to power all of your photo and video devices on location

One of the biggest issues for photographers and filmmakers working on location is that of power. Many of us carry spare batteries of multiple kinds in our bags whenever we go out to shoot – for me, that’s usually 6 batteries each for 2 cameras, a couple of big USB power banks and my Novoo. Maybe a few LiPo batteries if I need LED lights. But all of those are a hassle.

Core SWX has an option that can help deliver power to all of my devices and more, cutting the number of different types of batteries one needs to take out with them. It’s called the Powerbase Edge, and we had a chat with Core SWX about it at NAB 2019.

DIYP reviews the Novoo AC power bank – A location shooter’s best friend

I’ve been keeping an eye on portable power options for probably about a decade now. Most of my work is on location, I’m often away for several days at a time, and much of my equipment requires power or some kind or another.

Recently, I was asked if I wanted to check out the Novoo AC Power Bank. It looked an intriguing little unit so I agreed to have a look. While I waited for it to arrive I was expecting to be entirely underwhelmed, but it’s actually really impressed me.

Quick Tip: How to get X12 more time than the Sony camera battery

If you are shooting with a Sony camera, you know that they eat and spit batteries faster than I eat M&Ms. One trivial options is carry another set of batteries (though originals are about $45 each). What I am doing is using off the shelf power banks to run the Sony for much longer than its original battery.

Power your camera for days on a battery that takes seconds to charge

Now this is an idea I think we can all get behind. Anything that keeps us charged faster and for longer while out shooting can’t be bad. So, imagine being able to go out and shoot as much as you want for as long as you want without having to worry about your battery life at all. And if it does run out, you can recharge it in just a few seconds.

Such batteries are the vision of scientists at the Univercity of Central Florida, using supercapacitors. Supercapacitors store more energy and can be recharged more than 30,000 times without degrading. Using phones a a comparison, most phone batteries tend to last only around 1,500 charges before severe degradation kicks in. This is why your 3 year old iPhone barely lasts til lunch despite charging overnight.
