Stuck in a rut with your portrait compositions? Here’s how to break out of it

Sometimes if I’ve been doing a lot of shoots of the same type of thing in quick succession, I can find myself in the unfortunate position of falling back on the exact same ideas, compositions and even poses. This becomes particularly apparent if I’m working with the same subject.

Obviously, we want our photographs to all zing with individuality and something I always try to do is to create something unique for not just my clients, but for myself as well. But how do you break out of that photography composition rut when you find yourself slipping into it? In this video, portrait photographer Julia Trotti has a few great ideas to fall back on, to help you get your ideas fresh and flowing again during your next shoot.

There are plenty of tips out there for posing women who aren’t models. However, tips for posing male non-models are still not that common, so we always love when we find some useful ones. Well, this video from Adorama has quite a few of them. Pye Jirsa teams up with Derek Pratt to share ten male posing tips in about ten minutes. Other than having fun watching Derek goof around, you’ll learn some great tricks for turning your model from Forest Gump to Jason Statham.

OK, I lied. These posing tips are relevant for posing models as well.

When you shoot “ordinary people,” they are not always aware what which post highlights their best features—things like the shape of the face, long noses, big ears, and so on. Experienced models will usually know how to pose to look at their best, but for the rest of us, here we go.

Photographer Jerry Ghionis shares a few posing tips for shooting people, focusing on non-models. Of course, we can always go into photoshop and liquify our models to perfection, but Jerry shares how to make people look goon in-camera.
