Blackmagic quietly releases the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 and it’s basically a 6K Pro without built-in ND

To absolutely none of the usual Blackmagic fanfare, the company has today released the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2. It’s a fairly big upgrade over the original Pocket 6K, as it’s essentially a Pocket 6K Pro but without the built-in ND filter, which keeps the price of the 6K G2 at $1,999, same as the original 6K. This also means you get that 5″ tilting touchscreen display, NP-F batteries, optional EVF and Mini-XLR input.

Blackmagic has also announced the new Blackmagic Camera 7.9 Update today, adding 6K G2 support and adding an updated user interface to the Pocket 4K, 6K and 6K Pro, along with focus assist intensity adjustment, custom presets and LUTs are retained after software updates and improved lens and autofocus support. It also adds support for the Pocket 6K G2 to Blackmagic RAW.

This app lets you control your Pocket 4K/6K camera from your Apple Watch

Remote control is always handy, especially when it comes to video. If you’ve got your camera locked off on a tripod, especially if it’s hidden within a cage or somewhere not in easy reach, it’s an invaluable ability to have. There are a number of ways to control your Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K and Pocket 6K cameras out there already, but this one’s easy to keep with you, because it’s always on your wrist.

This is the LVZwatch by LeViteZer, and it’s an app that runs on the Apple Watch and your iPhone to communicate with your Blackmagic camera. It’s a very simple app which currently allows you to adjust white balance, ISO, shutter speed, aperture and focus distance.

CDA Tek’s LiDAR module lets you get fast autofocus on any camera – even in the dark

It’s taken a while for this one to come to market, having first been teased in July 2019, and it’s still not quite there, but it’s close. Originally shown off as an early prototype alongside the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, the CDA-Tek AFX, as it’s now known, works with the Pocket 6K as well, communicating with either camera over Bluetooth, requiring no external cables.

But the AFX also has an extra trick up its sleeve. It now also allows you to add LiDAR autofocus support to any lens, including manual focus ones, thanks to new communication protocols added for the Tilta Nucleus-M and Nucleus-Nano focus motors. It’s being launched via Indiegogo, already having hammered its goal with 30 days left.

Blackmagic is announcing something today – Could it be a full-frame Pocket 6K Pro? Watch live here

As you can see from the embedded YouTube video above, Blackmagic is going live in a few hours to announce “new developments in cameras”. Blackmagic does “camera updates” like this fairly regularly, but usually, they come with a pretty big announcement. Sometimes it’s a major firmware update that adds major new functionality and sometimes it’s a whole new camera.

If it is a new camera, though, what could it be? With all the talk of the EOS R5 over the last few months and its full-frame 8K RAW, might Blackmagic be getting to release a new challenger? Could they be announcing an update to the Pocket 6K? A “Pocket 6K Pro” with a full-frame sensor that doesn’t overheat after 20 minutes?

Tilta’s flip-up LCD mod for the Blackmagic Pocket 4K & 6K is now available in the USA [Updated]

Remember that flip-up LCD modification somebody made to their Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K last year? Well, Tilta showed off a similar modification for the Pocket 4K and Pocket 6K at IBC last September. At the time, there was no word on exactly when it would become available.

Now, though, it’s listed on the Tilta website for customers in the USA. It’s called the Tiltaing and it’ll cost you $279-299 for a self-install kit or $528-548 to have Tilta install it for you. Although, at the moment, the latter is the only option.

When it comes to custom power solutions, Indipro Tools is one of the names that’s been popping up more and more lately. They offer a range of batteries and connectors for powering a whole bunch of different devices. Something on their stand at PhotoPlus 2019 caught our eye, though, so we stopped by to have a chat.

It’s a top cage handle for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K. Sure, top handles are nothing new, but this one contains a battery that can actually power the Pocket 4K and 6K cameras for up to five hours of use.

Blackmagic update for the Pocket 4K adds anamorphic lens support and USB control

Blackmagic just dropped a big update for the Pocket 4K and Pocket 6K cameras. It comes as part of the Blackmagic Camera 6.6 update, which also includes updates for Blackmagic RAW support in Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro.

The update brings 2.4:1 4K 75fps, 2.6K 120fps and 2880×2160 up to 80fps for anamorphic lenses with 2x and 1.33x desqueeze preview options. Both cameras also receive USB PTP control support (yes, it should finally talk to your gimbal!), a built-in horizon levelling tool and an up to 8x pinch-zoom function for the touchscreen LCD.[Read More…]

DaVinci Resolve has come a very long way over the last few years. From its humble existing as the colour grading tool of choice, it’s grown into a full-blown editor that now easily competes with the established big boys in the non-linear editing world, like Premiere Pro, Final Cut and Avid. After several months of beta testing, Blackmagic has now announced the final release of version 16.1, including a lot of updates.

When Blackmagic announced the new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, they did something very different from the launch of the Pocket 4K. They actually started shipping them only a couple of days afterwards. That means they’re already starting to get into peoples hands, and nobody’s complaining about being on backorder.

One filmmaker who’s managed to get his hands on one already is my friend Jesse Watson. You might remember Jesse from his stunning Space X launch timelapse last year, which was picked up by Google for their Year in Search 2018 video, garnering over 113,000,000 views. This time, he’s pointing his camera right towards the full moon.

The LucAdapters Magicboost will let your Blackmagic Pocket 6K shoot full frame raw video with EF lenses

Italian company, LucAdapters is famous for making the Magicbooster; A focal length reducer for the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K and various other cameras, bringing them up to a full-frame field of view while retaining the native mount on the camera. It sits between the sensor and the lens mount in order to do its magic.

Now, LucAdapters has announced the Magicbooster Pocket 6K, which will allow you to use full-frame Canon EF mount lenses on the Pocket 6K and get the full field of view, while also giving a bit of a speed boost.
