A quick guide for using Pixel Shift in Lightroom

Pentax Pixel Shift is a fantastic feature when it comes to boosting the dynamic range, increase the level of detail and reduce the noise in an image. Many product photographers employ this feature for increased detail, but it can also yield great results for landscape photography. That said, the technology still faces some challenges when there is motion in a scene.

Now, Lightroom can handle Pixel Shift images, but it’s really lost even with the slightest blur. Think moving foliage for example. Pixel shift technology captures four images, so it takes the camera four times as much to take an image. This can add up to quite a bit of movement. Both Silkypix and RawTherapee have developed an algorithm to deal with movement. RawTherapee is even free. If you have the time, RawTherapee does a fabulous job with Pixel Shift and motion, but it has a steep learning curve.

Lightroom now supports Sony Pixel Shift ARQ files

It was only two weeks ago that Adobe introduced the latest Lightroom update. However, there was one thing they didn’t mention and that many of you may find important. Apparently, Lightroom can now support for Sony ARQ files without you having to convert them to DNG first.

Sony A7RIII Pixel Shift Function Demo

The new Sony A7RIII has a new function that is called Pixel Shift. This function basically increases the resolution of your images by 4 times. In short: the camera takes 4 photos and shifts the sensor 1 pixel in between. By combining these images later (the camera doesn’t do this) you get an image that has 4 times the resolution of a normal raw image (4×42 Megapixel). This does NOT mean your file is suddenly 168 Megapixels. The files you get are still 42 Megapixel but they contain way more detail, especially noticeable when you zoom in 100%.

So how exactly does this work? By shifting the sensor by 1 pixel in every direction the sensor captures the full RGB data for every pixel. This is explained in Sony’s own video:

Pentax Unveils The Pentax K-3 II Declaring It To Be The Sharpest APC To Date

Ricoh just announced the Pentax K-3 II. The camera is the successor to the popular Pentax K-3. The camera has some similarities to the prior K-3 and some new features.

The K-3 II has the same magnesium alloy casing, metal chassis as the K3, and a sensor featuring 24.35 effective megapixels.

As far as focus is concerned the camera has a 27-point AF system and it can shoot up to approximately 8.3 frames per second.

One of the raved additions to the camera is an improved 4.5EV stop shake reduction system. Ricoh claims that it will be the sharpest APC to date and also included a selectable anti-aliasing filter, which can be turned on or off to either garner the highest resolution and sharpness possible or provide enhanced protection against moiré.
